Senior System Operations Trainer

Summary

The Senior System Operations Trainer role is to continually review all NYPA System Operator RTRR and non-RTRR tasks and related System Operator documents/ guides. Responsible for designing, developing/ updating, and delivering quality training to Control Center Operators and NYPA identified RTRR Operations Support Staff. Quality Training consists of classroom training including simulation technology (if applicable) as determined by Principal Operations Support Director and/or ECC Management. Training must support NYPA Policies, Procedures, NERC Reliability Standards, compliance, technical documents, and task that support Control Center Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Create/ modify Operator On-the-Job training guides, record training date completions, and develop tests in QTS software. Ensure hardcopy supporting documentation is retained and available for audit.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on system operations in order to train system operators.
  • Train system operators on system operations with a focus on the following subjects:
    • NYPA Control Center task objectives and initiating conditions (RTRR & non-RTRR
    • EMS functionality and how technical documentation (Generation, transmission, water management) relates to established operator tools and system displays.
    • NYPA’s role in the Bulk Electric System including basic and advanced power flow concepts.
  • Develop, update, maintain, and deliver training while validating competency and remediation.
  • Ensure training material, student evaluations, simulation results, and records are organized and secured to comply with NERC PER training requirements and audits.
  • Utilize NYPA’s EMS to perform simulation training when required.
  • Assist or take a main role in providing NYPA evidence during NERC/ NPCC audits.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Technical writing/ instructional design experience
  • EMS Situational Tool Awareness / Operations Training Simulator experience desired
  • Excellent organizational, time management, verbal, and written skills
  • Ability to learn Systematic approach to training (ADDIE) process development
  • Strong presentation/ training skills to deliver NERC approved (ILA) training to System Operators
  • Strong Mentoring skills
  • Ability to understand all Control Center Tasks and how they relate to NERC compliance requirements.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Education

  • Preferred – BS degree in Electrical Engineering(or Technology) – ABET accredited
  • Required – 2-year degree technical degree.

Experience

  • Minimum 5-years experience in
  • System Operations experience (BES),
  • Power System, Operations (Generation, or transmission),
  • Nuclear Navy or specialized miliary technical training and or Instructor experience
  • NERC Transmission Operator certification Required

Physical Requirements

New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $115,500 – $141,000. Salary offered will be determined based the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
