Overview
The Senior Therapeutic Recreation Specialist develops, coordinates, administers, conducts, and facilitates the integration of programs designed to meet the needs of the disabled and provide therapeutic resources to the community.
Essential Functions
Essential Functions
1 Develops, implements, documents, and assists in the development of program goals for the therapeutic needs of disabled patrons and community members; facilitates various and diverse programming for adults with various disabilities.
2 Serves as advocate and liaison for disabled participants to inform appropriate agencies, organizations, corporations of needs and promote therapeutic recreation programs and services.
3 Supervises and directs daily program and activity coordination of the therapeutic facility; provides specialized assistance for program staff, reservations, and building maintenance to ensure a positive and productive atmosphere for staff and citizens.
4 Directs the activities of assigned interns, volunteers, and seasonal recreation staff to ensure implementation of therapeutic recreation programs; coordinates summer and seasonal programs, ensures enough personnel to for successful implementation, and instructs and facilitates leisure service activities.
5 Develops and maintains appropriate records, reports, and responses pertaining to regional programs, projects, and concerns for disabled persons.
6 Secures alternative funding sources from the private sector to implement programs and projects for disabled
persons; assists in all functions related to collection and reconciliation of funds and financial records; inputs data required for program creation, program maintenance, program registration, and report printing using recreation registration software.
7 Conducts American Disabilities Act (ADA) self-evaluation and review for the Park & Recreation Department to
ensure compliance.
8 Performs any and all other tasks as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience
- 3 years of experience in recreation programming with a degree and 5 years experience without.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
Education
- High School Diploma, GED

1 Knowledge of impaired populations and functioning characteristics.
2 Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and techniques.
3 Knowledge of first aid principles and practices and lifeguarding certifications if working with aquatics classes.
4 Ability to enforce recreation, program, and sporting regulations.
5 Marketing, promoting, and developing strong and effective therapeutic programming and special events.
6 Accounting principles, funding, and general expense tracking and budgeting.
7 Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
8 Knowledge of strong customer service principles and practices.
9 Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
