JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Vice President, MarVista Content Studio Business & Legal Affairs, will be a member of the Business & Legal Affairs leadership team and will help manage business affairs and legal activities across the development and production of key programming verticals within MarVista’s growing slate of cost-effective, targeted programming. This role will be directly responsible for all aspects of development-related deal-making as well as the business affairs and legal oversight of projects from greenlight through delivery. This role will report to the Head of Business and Legal Affairs at MarVista and have a dotted line into Fox Entertainment’s legal team.
A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead negotiations with MarVista creative and production-related partners, including content owners, external production partners, agencies, talent, etc.
- Structure, draft, and negotiate development and production-related agreements for films and series, including agreements with rightsholders, writers, producers, directors, and on-camera talent
- Structure and lead the negotiation and contract process for one-off strategic partnerships with third parties, including rightsholders and producers as requested by the Head of Business and Legal Affairs
- Manage relationships with external production legal counsel to ensure they are aligned with MarVista / Fox goals and requirements
- Bring a lens for “scalability” to all aspects of the job, including:
- Staffing and building an organization to address MarVista’s growing content slate
- Templatizing and creating deal structures that efficiently serve volume needs
- Extending company standards and approaches to 3rd party productions
- Liaise with business affairs counterparts in rights licensing to ensure content is created according to licensing parameters; build original co-productions in partnership with rights licensing colleagues
- Recommend best practices, including identifying the ideal agreement for each project, building effective compensation structures, optimizing tax credits, defining business models, etc.
- Identify, hire, manage, and mentor attorneys, paralegals, and related staff
- In partnership with MarVista’s production team, set the tone for the company’s relationship with unions, and collaborate with Fox labor relations and Fox Entertainment BALA to engage with labor unions
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Juris Doctor degree and member in good standing of the California bar
- 14+ years combined experience as a practicing entertainment attorney at a law firm and in-house at a network or studio, with extensive industry relationships with agents, talent, networks, and producers
- Experience in structuring and drafting agreements for a variety of content types with a focus on television series and television movies
- Strong management skillset with experience supervising and developing a team; ability to work well with other executives is crucial
- Excellent negotiating, drafting, analytical, interpersonal, organizational, prioritization, and time management skills in a high-volume environment
- Extensive knowledge of the entertainment industry including high-level talent agreements relating to television / new media development and production, guild/union and non-union labor and employment law issues relating to movie and series productions; intellectual property law; risk management issues, rights of publicity/privacy issues as well as an understanding of on-set production
- Understanding of tax incentives and procedures associated with claiming government tax incentives, both domestic and international, with an emphasis on Canada
- Understanding of television rights licensing agreements
- Working knowledge of Canadian productions and CanCon requirements
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to build relationships by promoting trust, collaboration, and partnership between departments and key stakeholders

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is: $300,000.00-350,000.00 annually for California. This role is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
