ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Senior Writer, LACERA position is responsible for writing and editing technical employee benefits copy on retirement and insurance plans, institutional investments, policies, procedures, related laws and tax codes, healthcare and pension industry updates in order to accurately and effectively communicate with plan members, staff members, peer organizations, stakeholders, and the public.

As a technical lead, the positions are distinguished by responsibility for advising on complex questions of language, style, and audience awareness; conducting quality review of all written materials; and for directing, reviewing, and providing technical guidance and feedback on work produced by lower-level writers and support staff to ensure consistent standards are followed.

The positions independently produce accurate, error-free, publication-ready editorial content for newsletters, brochures, forms, letters, statements, booklets, member guides, surveys, annual law books, annual financial reports, video scripts, and web-based communications for multiple audiences. The positions are responsible for developing and maintaining a proprietary style guide for all written work created for LACERA, among other materials; participating in the development of the communications plan and annual editorial calendar; conducting thorough research to add value to written content; and collaborating with Creative Coordinators, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders on written projects to meet their needs.

For detailed information about the position:

Vacancy Information: The current vacancy is in the Communications Division; however, the resulting eligible list for this examination can be used to fill other vacancies in LACERA, as they occur.

Work Schedule: This full-time position is required to work a 5/40 schedule (e.g. an eight (8) hour day, Monday through Friday) for at least the first six (6) months of employment.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to each classification. Depending on the assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Conceptualizes, writes, edits, and produces high-quality informational content for websites, printed materials, electronic communications, and social media to clearly and accurately communicate retirement benefit and LACERA-related information to members, employees, peers, and stakeholders.

Researches, fact checks, distills, and organizes retirement benefits information, including pension, healthcare and institutional investments, for communications projects including newsletters, brochures, forms, letters, statements, booklets, member guides, surveys, annual financial reports, law book, videos, websites, the LACERA intranet, and social media.

Develops and maintains LACERA’s comprehensive proprietary writers’ style guide with set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, terminology, formatting methods, branding rules, templates, and other procedures and tools, to be modeled by Communications Division writers and shared with LACERA staff members.

Serves as lead editor of the LACERA newsletters, including: providing pre-production content management oversight, prioritization, and graphic concepts; writing, formatting, and copyediting articles; routing content and applying feedback from subject matter experts and executives; providing art and layout suggestions; overseeing changes and reviewing proofs for technical issues; and making final quality control checks.

Copyedits and proofreads written content created by others, including consolidating and streamlining information; improving consistency, tone, and engagement to aid comprehension for intended audiences; and correcting typos, grammar, alignment, formatting, and other mechanical issues based on the LACERA style guide.

Provide technical guidance and constructive feedback to other writers in the creation of print and digital content, reviewing work products and assessing if standards are met for accuracy, structure, quality, tone, formatting, continuity, clarity, and mechanics, based on LACERA style guide and other guidelines.

Participates in the development of the editorial calendars.

Produces written communications to support organizational procedures, business continuity, and management’s strategic goals.

Executes written communications projects that can be translated across various media platforms, consulting with Creative Coordinators and stakeholders to determine project scope, obtaining and clarifying information from subject matter experts, and collaborating with media artists to conceptualize and integrate visual elements.

Analyzes current writing and editing workflows and processes, providing recommendations to improve procedures or implement software solutions based on current industry editorial trends, methods, and tools.

May plan, write, and edit data merge letters and annual statements for members in different membership statuses.

May be required to perform related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Option 1:
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in communications, English, or a related field -AND- five (5) years of experience in researching, writing, and editing complex material for multi-media projects, including print, video, web-based, and social media communications.

Option 2:
Seven (7) years of experience researching, writing, and editing complex material for multi-media projects, including print, video, web-based, and social media communications.

Option 3:
Three (3) years of experience at the level of

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

EXAMINATION CONTENT: This selection process will consist of:

Part I: A qualifying evaluation of application information and the desirable qualifications.
