Summary:

Sensory Panel Lead leads daily operation of multiple descriptive panels, including panel training and performance monitoring, and maintains and provides high quality data to support winery projects. Updates lexicon and references as needed. Provides support for other panel activities and sensory training programs. Responsible for all internal and descriptive panel set ups, product integrity, pre-tasting events, data entry, chemistry test requests and related project documentation.

What You Will Do:

  • Leads product orientation and daily descriptive sessions for multiple panels.
  • Audits and verifies panel data for each project in a timely manner.
  • Updates sensory lexicon and references as needed.
  • Leads all pre-taste functions in preparation of daily panel sessions.
  • Prepares panel sessions using sensory software to ensure proper sample sequencing and randomization for various testing protocols.
  • Requests analytical tests via the sensory software and ensures product samples are prepared for analytical testing for each project.
  • Communicates with Panel Manager and/or Project Managers regarding issues that will prevent the successful execution of the panel project and provides recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Tracks the progress of projects, including costs, product repetitions, participants and requested analytical tests.
  • Conducts weekly panelist calibration sessions and supports the Panel Manager as needed.
  • Coaches and trains sensory assistants and technicians on panel leading skills.
  • Assists when needed with daily lab tasks, such as sample preparation with 3-digit codes, reference preparation, data entry, kitchen and panel room cleaning, etc.
  • Ensures the correct effective operation of equipment used by the panel; including, but not limited to, dishwashers, water treatment, gas, refrigeration and heating devices.
  • Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and training of new panelists.
  • Assists with and participates in training employees as required.
  • Documents and ensures compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and sensory industry best practices.
  • Communicates with external agencies regarding temporary staff, software or other issues related to project execution as needed.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate details (both verbal and written) in a professional manner.
  • Experience working in team environments; strong team player.

What You Will Need:

  • High School Diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 5 years of lab support or sensory panel experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR Bachelor of Science degree plus 1 year of lab support or sensory panel experience; OR Associate degree plus 3 years of lab support or sensory panel experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Required to see, taste, and smell alcoholic beverages as part of job duties.
  • Required to possess the acuity to discern product flavors and tastes with a high level of accuracy.
  • Required to be 21 years of age or older.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Excel and Outlook.
  • Required to lift and move cases of product weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience working in consumer-packaged goods or food and beverage industry where maintaining controls, sanitation and product integrity are paramount.
  • Strong planning, time management and organization skills.
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training, meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.
  • Required to be 18 years or older. This may be in addition to other age requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

Compensation:

  • Hiring Salary Range Posted: $28.51 – $38.51 / hour
  • Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
