The Office of Internationalization provides leadership and support for the University of Denver’s efforts to internationalize the curriculum and the campus. International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) supports internationalization at the University of Denver by serving as a resource to students, faculty, and staff in meeting the needs of the international community on campus through programming and immigration services.
Position Summary:
The SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) Coordinator and Advisor is a full-time non-exempt, benefited position and reports to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
The SEVIS Coordinator and Advisor advises international students on immigration status and regulations; cultural adjustment and academic culture; English language matters; financial issues; orienting to life in the U.S.; and navigating the campus and community. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and processes student requests for immigration benefits. The position works with the Senior Advisor for the university’s reporting and compliance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Department of State (DOS) requirements.
Essential Functions:
Data management and immigration compliance: 45%
- Works with the Senior Advisor to manage international student records in SEVIS and ensure that student enrollment status and all reportable events are reported in SEVIS by mandated deadlines. Reportable events include students’ initial reporting to the University upon arrival; changes of address; changes of program and field of study; enrollment status; changes of employment status; and violations of status. Works with the appropriate campus offices to ensure the timely updating of information from Banner into Terra Dotta and resolve technical or procedural problems.
- Manage the daily uploading and downloading of data from SEVIS via the batch process.
- Serves as a test user for the functionality and usability of patches, new releases, and new or modified features in Terra Dotta.
- Generate reports on international students and scholars using data from Banner, Terra Dotta, SEVIS, and other sources to produce statistics on the international population at the University. Assist in completing the annual IIE Open Doors report.
General international student advising and immigration compliance: 45%
- Advises non-immigrant students on immigration regulations including maintenance of legal status, employment authorization, international travel, extensions of stay and changes of status, etc.
- Evaluates complex situations involving multiple stakeholders (student, university, government agencies) and advises on courses of action.
- Functions as legal signatory of immigration documents (I-20s and DS-2019s) for F and J international students granting or recommending benefits such as employment authorization and reduced course load.
- Acts as a liaison with university departments and government agencies to resolve complex immigration-related issues.
- Advises international students on personal, academic, financial, and cultural issues to support academic and personal success.
- Uses cross-cultural communication skills to work effectively with non-immigrant students, faculty, and staff and to communicate complex matters to non-native speakers of English.
- Provides education, support, and guidance about and on behalf of international students to DU faculty and staff and the larger university community.
Office Support: 10%
- Serve on campus committees as needed
- Staff I-House Front Desk as needed
- Other duties as assigned/as needed, due to changes in work environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills along with personal flexibility and collaborative style. In particular, ability to communicate well with speakers of English as a foreign language. Excellent verbal and written skills. Basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to comprehend and apply federal immigration regulation requirements to the practical experience of international students and scholars. Furthermore, the ability to translate these requirements into language that is understandable by international students and scholars. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations; teamwork experience; computer literacy; attention to detail; ability to balance competing priorities in a stimulating environment.
- Exceptional time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate professionally with students and University staff to collect information, and meet federally mandated reporting deadlines in managing SEVIS records.
- Work within a service office with a regular flow of student traffic, both domestic and international students. Interact with a variety of departments across campus and interact with individuals within the Office of Internationalization.
- Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time. Light lifting, and going up and down the stairs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
- U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence (required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State to serve as a DSO and ARO)
- 1 year of experience working with international students. Study Abroad experience cannot substitute for this experience
- 1 year of experience working in an office environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of immigration regulations
- Higher education work experience
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills particularly with non-native English speakers
- Experience managing large sets of data using computer programs such as Microsoft Access or Excel
- Experience coordinating projects, analyzing data, and generating reports from multiple data sources
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an international-related field
- NAFSA F-1 Beginner’s Certificate
- 3 years of experience working in an international student office
- Demonstrated experience with some or all of the following: SEVIS, Terra Dotta ISSS, Banner, SLATE, SARSGrid, Mail Chimp, Qualtrics, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Demonstrated experience working with CRM systems
- Experience as a DSO and/or ARO
- Demonstrated experience with event planning

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Some nights and weekends required.
This position is eligible for a hybrid (combination of in-person/remote) work schedule of up to one regularly scheduled remote day per week.

The salary grade for the position is 7.
Hourly Range:
The hourly range for this position is $23.00-$26.56.
