Sixth Grade Math Teacher (Full-Time – 1 Year Leave Coverage)

The Overlake School, Redmond, WA

The Overlake School seeks a full-time Sixth Grade Math Teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.

Founded in 1967, The Overlake School is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational, college preparatory day school. Each Overlake community member is committed to the school’s mission to champion students and their vast potential through engaging educational experiences in a diverse and inclusive community. Overlake students are valued as multifaceted individuals and graduate with a passion for learning, ready for any path that contributes to a better world.

The Overlake School is committed to diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, or disability in the administration of its educational policies, financial aid, employment, and other school-administered programs. Our school is committed to the strategic goals of developing our collective capacity in areas of well-being for all, the attraction and retention of talented and qualified educators, integration of diversity, equity & inclusion into the life of our school, and defining our institutional identity.

Description: The Overlake School seeks a 6th Grade math teacher for a one-year leave replacement position. The ideal candidate is an outstanding middle grades educator who will work to ensure student success. The 6th Grade math teacher should contribute enthusiastically to our school community and will work closely with the 6th Grade team as well as with the Mathematics and Computer Science department. The ideal candidate will be comfortable fostering supportive student-teacher-family relationships and differentiating instruction for a diverse group of students.

The current 6th Grade math curriculum focuses on pre-algebra curriculum where students of all levels work together. Classes are student centered and activities are differentiated to meet the needs of students. The focus is on the ‘why’ of math rather than the ‘how.’ Students understanding what they are doing is more important than speed and following math rules. The goal is to have students leave 6th grade as mathematicians rather than human calculators. For more information on our department’s scope and sequence, please see our curriculum guide. The Overlake School’s strategic vision is to develop its capacity to have equity and inclusion at the institution’s heart in its teaching and learning. We seek educators who can carry cultural competence and teach for equity and justice as central to their instruction.

Teaching Responsibilities and Duties: Teach four sections of 6th Grade math, lead a 6th Grade advisory (homeroom), supervise 6th Grade Study Hall, sponsor a Middle School club, and lead students on a one-week Project Week offering in the spring. Teachers are also required to attend 6th Grade team meetings, department meetings, division, and all-school faculty meetings.
