Purpose of the Position:
Under general supervision, provides limited para-professional social services to clients and their families. Provides support to breastfeeding groups and prenatal breastfeeding classes for WIC participants and provides individual breastfeeding education in the WIC clinic as needed. Provides on-going breastfeeding education and/or counseling to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals as determined by the local WIC program. Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including education on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers to breastfeeding, and how to start breastfeeding successfully. Service Breastfeeding Warm-line calls from WIC participants. Travel to home and hospital to support participants as needed. Uses proper and consistent documentation for peer counselor contacts in peer counselor data base system. Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/ workshops as appropriate. Completes other duties as assigned. “This position works to promote and protect the health and safety of the residents of Cobb and Douglas Counties.”

Essential Functions (include, but are not limited to):
• Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all mothers.
• A paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in social services related field from an accredited college or university OR High school diploma or GED AND Two years of experience in a social service related position OR One year of experience at the lower level Social Svcs Tech 1 (SST010) or equivalent position
Job Requirements:
• Must be a current or former WIC participant who has breastfed at least one child for six months or more (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
• Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and has a strong desire to help other mothers enjoy a positive breastfeeding experience.
• Must have a telephone and is willing to make phone calls from home.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Must be able to assist moms with breastfeeding in assigned WIC Clinic.
• Basic computer skills needed.
Preferred Qualifications: The ability to translate English to Spanish and Spanish to English orally and in writing is preferred but not required. Previous experience as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. Certificate of completion of Loving Support Breastfeeding Training as recognized by USDA.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands: Inventory Management may require lifting of up to 50 pounds. Fast paced work environment; ability to prioritize and self-manage tasks as needed in office AND home setting. Some travel involving home/hospital visits, trainings, meetings, and outreach.
Salary Information: $31,008.00 Annually / Pay Grade E
