POSITION SUMMARY
Job Description Summary:
This job involves the supervision of a staff of Social Workers in Child Protection Services. The CPS unit receives reports, screens, assesses referrals and provides social work services to protect children from abuse, neglect and dependency. The supervisor assigns cases to social workers, coordinates work flow operations, and supervises staff through case review and consultation which requires the provision of substantial and recurring technical direction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Review program objectives and service delivery needs with staff.
- Support employees in following standards of child welfare. Explain and provide guidance to staff when policy changes occur.
- Evaluate the work of employees through case reviews, conferences and informal discussions to assure compliance with policy standards and organizational expectations.
- Assign cases to staff and maintain workload balance. It may be necessary to make changes in work procedures to meet demands.
- Communicate with higher-level management planning needs for staff and issues that influence programmatic goals and objectives.
- Minimal but occasional involvement in budget requests and providing justification for filling vacancies within the unit.
- Train employees internally and assisting in coordinating formal training for employees.
- Perform employee evaluations. Maintain documentation of any work performance issue, and if necessary, issue oral warnings, develop work plans with an employee. Possible direct participation in the termination of an employee.
- Select applicants for vacancy postings, interview applicants and make recommendations to higher-level management on hiring decisions.
- Provide oversight and approval of staff’s time entries in Daysheets and Executime.
- Supervise staff of 5+/- social workers who are responsible for the delivery of intensive social work services to client and their families who have serious and complicated social, economic, emotional or mental health issues.
- Maintain internal data logs and submit required reports timely
- Employee will need to work a varied schedule beyond the typical 40 hour, 8-5 workday due to the responsibilities involved with providing protective services to the public and support to CPS staff.
- Any other reasonable duty as required by employer, to include but not limited to serving as an Emergency Shelter Manager or assisting in emergency food and nutrition services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies that govern social work programs.
- Skills in supervising, training, or orienting lower-level social workers.
- Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
- Considerable knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision.
- Ability to be flexible. This is vital within scheduled work hours as CPS is frequently unpredictable.
- Ability to coach, motivate, teach, support, and counsel employees as well as serve in the role of an advocate.
Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience
- Or a Bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience
- Or a Master’s degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of directly related experience
- Or a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of directly related experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work Environment/Location/Physical Demands:
- Employees work in offices, but may accompany their employees to homes, schools, health and mental health agencies.
- Employees will frequently be required to work beyond the typical 40-hour workweek due to the responsibilities of providing protection to children at risk of abuse, neglect or dependency.
- Employee will need to be available to their employees before and after the typical “8:00-5:00” work schedule as Child Protective Services Social Workers frequently work a varied schedule to meet the needs of the families receiving services.
- The work environment is stressful due to the complexity of the cases in child protection services.
- The job is very past paced and emotionally demanding
