General Statement of Duties
Forsyth County Department of Social Services is accepting applications for Social Workers in our Children’s Services Division. Positions are typically located in Family & Children Services programs areas such as Foster Home Licensing, Visitation or other departments within DSS.
Positions available are subject to change depending on vacancies at the time of application.
Applicants may be considered for any “Social Worker” available job openings in the Children’s Services Division at the time of application. Applicants may choose which positions they are interested in applying for in the supplemental questions.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, compassionate, dependable professional with excellent assessment skills, sound judgement and the ability to serve children and families from all socioeconomic backgrounds with a range of mental capacities without personal bias.
Work involves evaluating the client’s situation and his/her ability to deal with it, developing a social history, psychosocial assessment, service plan and/or treatment plan and follow up; may provide information to and confer with school, natural parents and foster parents on rehabilitation plans, behavior management, and other problem areas or needs. Employee in this class may also coordinate a specialized program which provides a variety of services in a variety of settings. Work is reviewed through quality control and technical and administrative review.

Requires independent decision-making, assessment skills, professional judgment, effective interview skills, ability to collaborate and knowledge of community resources, ability to effectively communicate (both orally and written) with a diverse population from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and a variety of physical and/or mental capabilities, must be able to multi-task. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary
The ideal candidate would possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities: – Knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and the community. – Knowledge of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources. – Knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies that govern social work programs. – Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work or;
Master’s degree in counseling or;
Four-year degree in a human services field or a related curriculum including at least 15 semester hours in courses related to social work or counseling and six months of social work or counseling experience or;
Four-year degree and one year of experience in counseling or in a related human services field which provides experience in techniques of counseling, casework, group work, or community organization.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for minimum qualification requirements.
Valid driver’s license is required. County vehicles will be used for conducting home visits, transporting clients to and from medical appointments and running essential errands.

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Explains available resources and makes client referrals as needed
- Coordinates a specialized program such as childcare services, special needs children, maternity care, etc.
- Investigates reports of abuse/neglect of children or vulnerable adults
- Provides program information and education to community groups
- Provides program information and education to community groups
- Completes timely case documents and other required paperwork

- Maintaining a specific license such as a driver’s license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
