POSITION SUMMARY
Job Description Summary:

Responsible for performing Intake functions for Child Welfare Services. Employee must have excellent verbal and written skills. Employee must be able to communicate effectively with different cultures and socioeconomic classes via phone and through personal contact. Employee should have computer proficiency and must be flexible to accommodate varied task assignments. Ability to identify protection needs of abused, neglected children through the collection of information from the reporting public using a structured questionnaire. Employee will provide assistance to fellow social work staff by conducting central registry checks, civil and criminal background checks using state approved databases. Employee will provide necessary support to other social work staff as needed. This position may involve serving as a Child and Family Team Facilitator. Employee may be required to make public presentations within the community on Child Protective Services and maltreatment signs to watch for in children who have been abused or neglected. Intake referrals to this position may be received from the general community, from school personnel, from mental health professionals, from other child and family servicing agencies or from with the department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Employee will complete the CPS Structured Intake form as outlined in NC DHHS policy when information is received alleging abuse, neglect or dependency of a child.
  • Employee must gather sufficient information from the reporter to aid in the determination of the report meeting the statutory guidelines for child maltreatment.
  • Employee will offer continuous support to the reporter by explaining the purpose of CPS, explaining confidentiality regarding the report and the identity of the reporter, discussing the importance of reporting all while garnishing vital information needed for the intake process.
  • The employee will review agency records prior to the screening of the report.
  • The employee will make the initial screening decision of an intake report and then be able to discuss the rationale with the supervisor based on policy knowledge.
  • The employee will conduct NC Fast/CW Assist background checks to assist in obtaining identifying case participant information.
  • The employee will maintain an electronic intake log for data purposes.
  • The employee would be responsible for completing required notifications to the reporter, law enforcement, district attorney’s office and other professional agencies regarding the screening decisions of CPS intake reports.
  • The employee will make referrals to community resources.
  • The employee may facilitate Child and Family team meetings in child welfare cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Computer skills to include excel spreadsheets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of NC DHHS Intake policy
  • Ability to multitask and demonstrate flexibility
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and professional agencies who contact the department to make a CPS report or to seek out assistance and guidance.

Education/Certification: (minimum)

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution
  • Or, Bachelor’s degree in a human services filed from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience
  • Or, Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years directly related experience
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work Environment/Location/Physical Demands:

  • Employee would work in the office primarily
  • Employee may facilitate a Child and Family team meeting in the home of a client or at a public location.
  • Employee must be flexible with their schedule and may at times work over the regular 8 hour work day.
  • Employee may be faced with job hazards to include contact with irate people who may be hostile, resistant or violent.
  • Employee should have the ability to perform manual work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pound of force constantly to move objects.
