Nature of work:The primary function of a Social Worker Supervisor I is to supervise staff that support social work practice by interpreting policies and procedures and reviewing and monitoring the work performed including case records and reports to ensure quality service delivery and compliance with state and federal laws and agency policy.

This position is responsible for the training of CPS Social Workers new to the Protective Services field. Additionally, this position plays in integral role in the maintaining and updating of the CPS training program manuals and materials. This Supervisor oversees a Staff Services Analyst who conducts Case Review of the CPS cases, and conducts Quality Assurance of the Case Review work. The Supervisor interacts with all CPS Supervisors as their role as new employee trainer results in a transition to another CPS Unit’s Social Worker. The Supervisor oversees the CPS Legal Clerks, and manages the flow of the Court documentation processed by the Unit Staff. Therefore, the Supervisor must stay up to date on changing legal mandates and practices.

Examples of Duties
Typical duties of a Social Worker Supervisor I include:Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of support staff to ensure quality, completion, and compliance with department standards; identifies training needs, conducts training for all CPS staff and provides leadership and coaching for staff which includes using continuous quality improvement to improve practice; independently establishes a course of action to accomplish work objectives and adapts to meeting changing priorities; promotes cooperative professional working relations among staff, resolves conflicts, and monitors work environment; provides employees with guidance and prepares performance evaluations; and develops or revises policies, procedures, and templates to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance.

Controversial Issues: As a Social Worker Supervisor you may be required to take actions that conflict with your own values regarding client services, and agency operations. The Social Worker Supervisor may encounter clients who are emotionally charged; clients that have substance dependence, mental health, trauma or domestic violence history. A Social Worker Supervisor must be able to accept clients’ differences and interact with them in a non-judgmental manner.
Education, Experience & Licenses
In addition to the education and experience requirements specified in the Merit Systems/Cooperative Personnel Services classification specification, Tehama County requires:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Pattern 1: Three (3) years of full-time experience performing journey level social work case management duties* in a Social Worker II classification in an Interagency Merit System (IMS) county;

(Substitution: One year of graduate work in social work or counseling may substitute for one year of the required experience.)

OR

Pattern 2: One (1) year of full-time experience performing advanced journey level social work case management duties in a Social Worker III classification in an Interagency Merit System (IMS) county.

OR

Pattern 3: Four (4) years of full-time experience performing social work case management duties.

*Qualifying social work case management includes direct case work management, such as: assessment, evaluation; conducting investigations of abuse and neglect; preparing court reports; responsibility for a long term caseload, monitoring compliance through home calls and other personal contact; collaboration with other agencies and linking clients to resources and programs; development of a case plan, modification of case plans as needed/required; and authority to impose sanctions or implement actions that impact services.

LICENSE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a valid California driver’s license.
