NATURE OF WORK:
The primary function of a Social Worker Supervisor I is to supervise staff who determine client eligibility for the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Program by conducting detailed needs assessments. The Social Worker Supervisor I reviews and discusses information obtained by workers that includes assessing and interviewing clients to ascertain the nature of the issues in order to authorize or deny services.
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training; considerable understanding of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to casework; comprehension of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment; awareness of governmental and private organizations and community resources; knowledge of laws, regulations and policies which govern Social Work programs; must possess the ability to react to change productively; ability to supervise, train, or orient Social Workers or other staff; ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively; ability to exercise sound judgment and superior attention to detail; have a strong emphasis on continuous quality improvement; exceptional customer service skills and initiative; experience in maintaining cooperative relations and communications with clients, management, staff, and community partners; ability to maintain a high standard of professionalism; proficiency in Microsoft Office as well as basic knowledge of software and database programs.
Examples of Duties
Typical duties of a Social Worker Supervisor I for IHSS include:
Supervision of Social Workers who provide direct services to clients. The Social Worker I for IHSS coordinates workflow of operations and provides consultation to staff which requires the provision of substantial and recurring technical direction. Duties include oversight of the quality assurance and training unit; conducts independent case reviews; leads team meetings; trains staff on program and department policies; and provides support for staff due to case related stress. As a Social Worker Supervisor I, you may also be required to work evenings and/or weekends.
Controversial Issues:
As a Social Worker Supervisor I, you may be required to take actions or direct staff to take actions which may conflict with your/their own values regarding client services, and agency operations. The Social Worker Supervisor I may encounter clients who are emotionally charged; clients that have substance dependence, mental health, trauma or domestic violence history. A Social Worker Supervisor I must be able to accept clients’ differences and interact with them in a non-judgmental manner.
Education, Experience & Licenses
In addition to the education and experience requirements specified in the Merit Systems/Cooperative Personnel Services classification specification, Tehama County requires:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Pattern 1: Three (3) years of full-time experience performing journey level social work case management duties* in a Social Worker II classification in an Interagency Merit System (IMS) county;
(Substitution: One year of graduate work in social work or counseling may substitute for one year of the required experience.)
OR
Pattern 2: One (1) year of full-time experience performing advanced journey level social work case management duties in a Social Worker III classification in an Interagency Merit System (IMS) county.
OR
Pattern 3: Four (4) years of full-time experience performing social work case management duties.
LICENSE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires a valid California driver’s license.
