Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Sociology Instructor committed to community college students and their success. This position is full-time, non-tenure track on our Grandview campus. We are an innovative and equity-focused college, dedicated to helping our students achieve their academic and personal goals. All faculty are engaged in the assessment of college goals and purposes. The Sociology Instructor reports to the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position on our Grandview campus with an anticipated start date of September 2023.
Essential Tasks
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Earned Master’s degree in Sociology from an accredited college or university
- Demonstrated successful teaching experience
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to teach in a second social science discipline (especially but not limited to Chicano/a Studies or Ethnic Studies)
- Teaching experience at the community college level
- Experience leading efforts to increase student success in Sociology, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups
- Demonstrated ability to adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population at Yakima Valley College
- Experience developing curriculum
- Experience teaching through multiple modalities and such as online and/or interactive television, learning communities, and other interdisciplinary approaches
- Knowledge and understanding of assessment practices and methods (including student learning outcomes and program effectiveness)
- Experience advising students in an academic setting
- Strong interpersonal communication skills for effectively working and interacting with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, along with the ability to communicate effectively in an educational environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills in the classroom and with other professionals
Qualifications
JOB PROFILE:
- Teach foundational Sociology classes, as needed by the district.
- Demonstration of student-centered values consistent with the community college philosophy
- Preparation for course instruction and effective and full use of the designated class meeting time
- Availability for student consultation outside of class on a daily basis
- Development of departmental curriculum
- Participation in campus-wide committees
- Participation in college-wide registration and advising
- Commitment to systematic classroom, department, and college assessment and improvement
