DESCRIPTION

The mission of the UCSD Center for Epigenomics is to develop a quantitative and molecular framework to study the function and regulation of the human genome, with the ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of cancer and other human diseases. Epigenomics is at the forefront of Precision Medicine.

The epigenome, a term referring to the state of DNA methylation and the covalent modifications of histone proteins in a cell, plays a central role in regulating the functional output of the genome during development. Changes in the epigenome that result from exposure to stress, pathogenic conditions and during aging can determine the patterns of gene expression and predispose an individual to diseases. Epigenome research promises to significantly improve our understanding of the factors that drive human development and disease. The UCSD Center for Epigenomics will work with researchers on the UCSD campus and beyond to foster the application of epigenomic concepts and technologies to clinical, translational, and basic research.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Spatial and Functional Genomics, the Spatial and Functional Genomics Research Associate will perform molecular, cell biology, and biochemical experiments from biological samples including animal and human tissues. The Research Associate will be a hands-on experimentalist for the Center’s Spatial and Functional Genomics platform and will play a key role in setting up imaging-based single cell spatial genomics assays, viral vector-mediated high-throughput DNA cis-element reporter assays as well as CRISPR mediated gene expression perturbation screenings.

The incumbent will participate in experimental design and be responsible for careful record keeping, operating laboratory equipment, troubleshooting, quality control, and periodically summarizing results for supervisors. Additional duties include contributing to laboratory management, organization of laboratory reagents, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical knowledge in molecular biology and biological research or related field as typically attained by a bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with performing molecular biology techniques such as RNA or DNA FISH, IF staining, PCR and quantitative PCR. Hands-on experience with assays such as RNA-seq is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as MS Word and Excel. Experience in a Linux command environment is a plus, but not required.
  • Proven ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships in a diverse laboratory environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with other research staff, and function as a member of a research team. Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a diverse laboratory environment.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new techniques, and working in a fast-paced “startup” atmosphere.
  • Strong theoretical knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry, especially RNA biology, and biological research.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform molecular cloning and mammalian cell culture.

PREFERRED QUALICATIONS

  • Experience with operating advanced microscopy and next-generation-sequencing sample preparation.
  • Help to design and maintain reporting infrastructure to meet the needs of supervisors, and collaborators. Prepare reports in accordance with supervisor/collaborator needs and requirements, following research center reporting standards.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Occasional evenings and/or weekends may be required.
  • Willingness to work with animals, lentivirus, radioactive material, human tissue and standard hazardous laboratory compounds.
