Department Summary

The UNT Dallas Communication and Digital Media Speaking Center offers tutorial assistance in public speaking, small group, and interpersonal communication to students who need supplemental academic support. The Student Assistant serves as an important team member in the Speaking Center (working under the supervision of the Communication and Digital Media Program Coordinator), tutors students daily during face-to-face consultations, and performs clerical work for the Speaking Center and Radio Station as necessary. The Student Assistant would serve as the face of the Speaking Center and as a main contact for students, faculty, and staff.

Position Summary

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Be aware of and able to use a variety of strategies to work with a diverse clientele whose communication skills cover a wide range of ability.
  • Assist students in learning and practicing the concepts necessary for academic work pertaining to oral communication skills.
  • Mentor students to develop positive learning skills, such as critical thinking and analytical skills, academic and professional communication, and expression of thoughts and ideas through oral communication skills.
  • Provide a forum for participatory learning, which includes the active involvement of the tutee.
  • Aid the tutee in understanding oral communication strengths and weaknesses through evaluation of public presentations.
  • Support the teaching methods of the tutee’s instructor (e.g., always ask to see their notes!)
  • Refer students to the outside academic services and department if the personal or academic needs of the tutee are beyond the tutor’s expertise or job description.
  • Work the assigned hours per week unless making prior arrangements with the Communication and Digital Media Coordinator.
  • Prepare for tutoring sessions by reading required material, planning questions, and providing structure for the time spent with students.
  • Attend and complete mandatory trainings.
  • Interpret and clarify Speaking Center procedures to faculty, administration, staff, students, tutors, and visitors, and lead classroom presentations to advertise Speaking Center services.
  • Be familiar with all resources – cameras, tripods, iPads, Swivls, and laptops – located in the Speaking Center.
  • Reserve speaking center sessions and check in/out equipment to students.
  • Assist coordinators with special assignments, projects, and events.
  • Assist in preparing resources for the Speaking Center including handouts, workshops, website content, newsletter contributions, etc.
  • Aid students in scheduling appointments for the Speaking Center.
  • Direct the daily in-and-out flow of students in the Speaking Center.
  • Check in/out and maintain (e.g., clean and check for damage/malfunction) digital production equipment owned by the Communication and Digital Media Program.
  • Follow appropriate safety procedures and security measures related to work performed.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled University student in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion of a Communication and Digital Media degree. Applicants must possess the following:

  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately
  • Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Responsible, reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed COMM 1010 (Introduction to Communication) and/or COMM 2300 (Public Speaking) or equivalent courses and passed courses with an A or B.
  • Academic proficiency to provide students with public communication critiques and analysis.
  • Possess intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in oral and written communication skills, including grammar, pronunciation, and articulation.
  • Ability to operate a variety of technological devices, including personal computers, iPads, digital cameras, and Swivls.
  • Ability to work 10-19 hours per week M-F, with the potential for Saturday work based on demand
  • Ability to work under considerable pressure, to adjust to constant changes, to handle multiple tasks, and work with all kinds of students
  • Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives
  • Must have a UNT Dallas faculty recommendation (submitted via email to the Communication and Digital Media Program Coordinator).
