POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services and in accordance with state agency policies and procedures, the Speech and Language Pathologist is responsible for providing speech therapy services to children in Helping Hand’s outpatient clinic.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate language and oral motor skills related to communication: areas of assessment are hearing, receptive language, expressive language, oral motor skills and articulation.
  • Provide speech and language therapy to children and adults through individual and group sessions.
  • Write formal evaluation/assessment reports that include useful information for programming.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Complete all required paperwork.
  • Conduct 6-month, annual and discharge evaluations/reviews, and write appropriate supporting reports.
  • Provide direct speech and language therapy to clients in individual and in group settings, working with the child and parent to facilitate a child’s functions and skills related to language development.
  • Work independently or as part of a team in therapy sessions/groups.
  • Provide home programming and training to parents/guardians/caregivers to provide carryover of therapy in the home.
  • Ensure that the rights of the consumers are protected in accordance with agency manuals, policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Provide consultation to other staff members
  • Provide in-service training to staff and others as appropriate.
  • Maintain communication with parents regarding treatment and progress, as well as outside medical and therapy services. Obtain releases and request pertinent records from those sources.
  • Maintain contacts with other agencies and individuals for consultation and support services.
  • Maintain assigned space in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Keep abreast of best practice trends in fields of expertise.
  • Shall conform to the policies, procedures, practices, rules and regulations of Helping Hand (HH).
  • Fulfill necessary training requirements of the agency.

Qualifications

KEY COMPETENCIES:

  • Regular, predictable attendance is an essential requirement for this position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Verbal communication skills (English).
  • Ability to read printed materials (English).
  • Vision within functional limits in order to see and respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to work indoors and/or outdoors.
  • Ability to self-transport to work and home visits.
  • This position requires employees to work with persons who may become physically aggressive.
  • Ambulatory and able to climb stairs, sit and play on floor, move, react, and stand quickly.
  • Hearing within functional limits in order to respond to auditory requests for assistance.
  • Computer skills in the use of word processing, internet, and electronic mail software.
  • Ability to plan and conduct individual and group therapy off and on site.
  • Ability to conduct speech and language assessments via team and individual evaluations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong initiative and willingness to pitch in whenever needed.

EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Current license/registration with the state of Illinois to provide Speech and Language Pathologist Services. CFY’s are welcome to apply.
  • Experience working with children 0-21 years.
  • Experience with a range of disabilities and developmental delays.
