Sports Turf and Outdoor Facility Assistant Manager

We’re currently searching for a Sports Turf and Outdoor Facility Assistant Manager to join the Recreational Sports team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. This position will assist in maintaining the playability and appearance of all outdoor Recreation Spaces maintained by Recreational Sports including but not limited to 15+ acres of synthetic turf, 5+ acres of natural Bermuda fields, tennis and pickleball courts, a softball field, and a roller hockey rink.

Here’s what you need to know about the role:

1) You’ll be joining the Recreational Sports – Auxiliary Team: a department committed to enhancing the university community’s quality of life by educating and encouraging participation in activities that promote healthy lifestyles, social interactions, and leadership skills.

2) You’ll report to the Sports Turf and Outdoor Facility Manager. This position is a Regular, Calendar Year, 100% staff appointment, and considered to be emergency personnel. The employee may be required to report to work if the university is closed due to inclement weather. Some evening and weekend work may also be required.

3) You’ll be primarily responsible for maintaining and preparing outdoor recreational facilities while complying with appropriate regulations and codes; operating manual and power equipment such as riding mowers, snow removal equipment, graders, tractors, top dressers, aerators, and other grounds-related equipment and supervising part-time and student staff.

4) You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.

5) You’ll be offered a salary range between $40,000 to $45,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Ability and experience using mowers, tractors, field equipment, custodial equipment, trucks, hand tools, etc.
• Requires the mental ability to analyze, be precise, read, comprehend, follow, and provide written and oral instructions.

Preferred Qualifications• Experience in the athletic field and facility maintenance.
• Previous supervisory experience.
