Description
Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an experienced Sports Turfgrass Specialist to care for our Parks. Duties includes: plans, performs, and supervises general park maintenance and provides support for Recreational activities; with a strong emphasis on athletic field management. The athletic field management includes program planning for multiple varieties of sports field surfaces, implementation of turf care programs, field marking, and more.

Essential Duties
Essential Duties
- Supervises athletic field marking crew, and performs athletic field marking and grooming at department managed athletic fields.
- Leads crew in day-to-day tasks, setting daily goals and weekly schedules, and compiling annual reports.
- Operates motorized and hand-held equipment relative to work such as field marking machines, groomers, tampers, light trucks, mowers, etc.
- Operates heavy equipment including but not limited to tractors, loaders, and skid steers. Operations are for field maintenance, parks maintenance, special projects, and/or snow removal services at all properties assigned.
- Perform simple building and park maintenance activities (i.e., carpentry, plumbing, landscape, electrical, etc.) as necessary in support of department goals and objectives.
- Assist partners and other City agencies in evaluating and/or monitoring athletic field conditions or providing field prep and/or marking.
- Provides support services and supervision of program including, but not limited to baseball, soccer, softball, and other athletic programs.
- General athletic field maintenance including chemical application, special sporting field maintenance needs per sport, and mowing
- Performs routine technical calculations relative to work such as chemical application rates, paint bead mix rates, and calculation of quantities of needed materials such as paints, chalk, stone, asphalt, mulch, and/or other materials.
- General Irrigation management including inspection, repair, and other maintenance of existing irrigation systems.
- Fleet management of all Sports Field maintenance equipment by coordinating with Fleet Services for regular maintenance and repairs as needed. Preparing requests for new equipment needed to optimize field maintenance and quality.
- Tracks and/or documents work activities, work orders, logs, and time sheets, maintenance requests, preventative maintenance plans, site plans, needed improvements, capital requests, facility and/or equipment and supply inventories, or other planning and management activities as necessary
- Inspects facilities with various City agencies (i.e., Risk Management, Parks and Recreation, and Buildings and Grounds) to ensure compliance with applicable safety and maintenance standards.
- Provide custodial/trash removal services at park properties, shared-use sites, and facilities as needed.
- Interprets written/oral instructions: including blueprints and equipment/maintenance manuals.
- Performs a variety of tasks and duties during snow removal.
- Assists, participates, and leads in training.
- Communicates effectively and courteously with customers, peers, and others.
- Must have approved access to telephones for emergency duty.
- Works with Facility Supervisor in setting up and conducting weekly and monthly safety meetings.
- Assists the Facility Supervisor in staying abreast of current and changing industry accepted best management practices in the field of athletic field marking and maintenance.
- Monitors and assists in the rental and use of Parks and Recreation managed (or shared) parks and facilities.
- Directs facility support services, including set up and breakdown of Departmental activities.
- Provides support for parking at special events and/or facility rentals/use as needed.
- Provides customer support at special events and facility rentals/use and the City auction as needed.
- Conducts and/or participates in facility security roves during the course of normal job duties and works with other City agencies to promote facility safety and security as necessary.
- Acts as a point of public contact during programs, facility use, community market programs, activities, special events, or other Parks & Recreation and Community Market supported activities.
- Assists the Facility Supervisor in the maintenance and custodial care of fleet vehicles as required.
- Assist with Emergency Management Plan implementation as needed.
- Assists with snow and ice removal from walks and steps around recreation facilities.
- Regular and punctual attendance is required.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
- Serves as backup leader when Parks Maintenance Supervisor is absent.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises one fulltime Sports Turf Technician and up to four Parks & Recreation Park Service Workers on a regular basis. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
- Associate Degree Turf Science or similar is preferred, but a combination of experience and a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) will be considered.
- Significant experience installing, programming, and maintaining athletic field turf irrigation systems or equivalent.
- Significant experience running tractors and implements related to grading, top dressing, aerating, fertilizing, verti-cutting, tilling and other turn cultivation practices.
- Candidates with the following certifications such as Certified Turfgrass Professional, Irrigation Management Certificate, and/or other similar Green Industry certifications are preferred.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Virginia’s Drivers License and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
- CPR/General First-Aid Certification required within 6 months of date of hire.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
- Have or the ability to obtain a valid Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicators license within 180 days of employment
- Have or the ability to obtain a valid Virginia Fertilizer Applicators license within 180 days of employment
