Sprints Coach

Description

Under the direction of the Director of Adapted Athletics, the Sprints Coach is responsible for coaching, managing, and developing elite and recreational athletes that are part of the Adapted Athletics program. The Adapted Athletics program provides opportunities for individuals to participate in a diverse offering of inclusive and adaptive athletics and recreation activities within the University at a variety of skill and ability levels. As the Sprints Coach, you will be coaching all sprinting events (60m, 100m, 200m, 400m), recruiting athletes, managing team activities, and assisting on various aspects of the overall program, including fundraising, program infrastructure, and marketing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Functions

  • Maintains the health and well being of the student athletes
  • Creates yearly athletic program designed for each athlete
  • Plans and supervises group sprint workouts, training sessions and virtual trainings lasting approximately 2 hours/day
  • Tracks and assists with strength and conditioning program
  • Updates program calendar with practice dates and competitions
  • Conducts weekly athlete mental health check-in’s
  • Attends and coaches at track & field meets
  • Maintains a record of the athlete progress throughout each semester
  • Tracks annual goals and assists with program assessment
  • Leads team meetings
  • Ensures individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU and Aztec Recreation
  • Assists with marketing and monitors social media platforms
  • Monitors and organizes student intern work assignments
  • Collaborates with the director to develop annual budget and maintains records of expenses
  • Assists with team travel arrangements including flight/hotel reservations and travel reimbursements
  • Assists with donor/sponsor prospect research, networking, and fundraising events
  • Assists with the recruitment and onboarding for program staff and athletes
  • Provides timely reports on overall team goals and progression through the semester
  • Oversees and assists with athlete applications for CAF grants and any other grants
  • Conducts film review sessions with student athletes and appropriate parties to analyze technique
  • Organizes, facilitates, and supervises Adapted Athletics sprint events, including:
    • Camps
    • Clinics
    • Competitions
    • Community Events
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Customer Service and Collaboration

  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departments
  • Represents the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all times
  • Maintains positive and effective working relationships with all athletes and staff

Safety

  • Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
  • Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
  • Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/ or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately

Minimum Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, or a related field preferred

Experience:

  • 1-2 years experience coaching track and field, preferably in collegiate environment
  • Previous experience working with adaptive athletes preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies

License & Certification:

  • USATF Track and Field Level 1 or Nationally Recognized Track and Field Certification preferred
  • Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certifications required within 30 days of employment
  • Valid California Drivers’ License and proof of automobile insurance are required if driving program vehicles or individuals
  • U.S. Center for Safe Sport or equivalent national recognized certification required within 30 days of employment

Trainings:

  • Must complete Gender Awareness, Computer Security and Sexual Harassment Prevention training within 30 days of hire
  • Must complete the California Defensive Driving Course if driving program vehicles or individuals

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success and ability to recruit, train, and evaluate collegiate student athletes
  • Have a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadership
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumni
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work individually and with a team
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, problem solve and meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite applications, Aztec Recreation website
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present program materials in front of an audience

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a part-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week including evenings and weekends; employee schedules vary according to team needs throughout the academic year.

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Starting range $17.00-$21.50/hour

A Background Check (including a criminal records check) and Live Scan must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered this position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.

MVR and DMV record review is required for positions that drive university vehicles and/or passengers for program related trips.
