DEFINITION: Under general supervision, drives tractor-trailers, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds, automobiles, step vans, light duty trucks, and other vehicles to deliver and pick-up supplies, materials, mail, documents, food, and equipment. Loads and unloads vehicles. Assists in the operation of a warehouse or related facility. Leads other staff members in the office and school moves. Performs manual labor tasks. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Drives tractor-trailers and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds. Drives automobiles, step vans, light duty trucks, and other vehicles. Delivers and picks-up supplies, materials, mail, documents, food, and equipment. Drives and makes stops along an established route.

Assists material handlers and others in the receipt and storage of items. Pulls, organizes, and prepares items for delivery. Loads items onto vans, trucks, automobiles, and trailers. Obtains proper signatures for delivery. Inspects equipment and materials returned from loan.

Leads, facilitates, and participates in office and school moves/relocations. Leads material handlers and others assigned to a move project to ensure efficient and effective operations. Moves and carries furniture and equipment. Provides assistance to other drivers.

Acts as liaison between Office of Logistics and schools or offices while making deliveries. Communicates with site about deliveries and pickups. Provides excellent customer service to all stakeholders.

Assembles and dissembles furniture and/or equipment. Makes minor repairs to equipment. Keeps simple records and logs. Performs various manual labor tasks.

Maintains an inventory of fixed assets. Locates, tags, and documents new fixed assets. Processes and documents the transfer of fixed assets. Assists in the sale/disposal of fixed assets and surplus property.

Verifies all information regarding Transfer Requisition (T-Req) and Certificate of Records Destruction (CORD) to ensure that all the appropriate and approved materials are handled accordingly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent. Three years of warehouse, distribution, or related experience. Supervisory experience is preferred.
(Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.)

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid commercial, class A Maryland driver’s license or an equivalent is required. (The license may require certain endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of warehouse and storage facility operations. Knowledge of the operation of tractor-trailers, commercial vehicles, automobiles, light trucks, step vans, and forklifts.

Skill in receiving, storing, and delivering items. Skill in operating tractor-trailers (which includes a pre-trip inspection and road test), commercial vehicles, automobiles, light trucks, and step vans.

Ability to lead material handlers and others. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to keep records of deliveries and the receipt of items.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The work of this class entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying of very heavy objects and the operation of vehicles and equipment. Work requires exposure to warehouse and shop environments that include exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, machinery, and equipment. Work requires the operation of vehicles and travel throughout Baltimore County.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential-As-Needed Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency when contacted and directed to do so.

Persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

Employees who do not maintain the required permit and license required to work in this classification will be terminated.

This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. It shall not be held to exclude duties not mentioned nor limit the right of management to assign work to employees.

GRADE: Grade 07 on the AFSCME Pay Scale, $21.77 – $31.01 per hour

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to hire.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
