Sr. Engineer Compute Observability

Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Sr. Engineer Compute Observability to be located in Raritan, NJ (preferred). Remote work options in North America, Latin America or EMEA may be considered on a case-by-case basis and if approved by the Company.

Event monitoring and management is undergoing a transformation to support strategic initiatives to move towards Observability. The Sr. Engineer will play a key role in the engineering and operational management of observability platforms, automated remediation, and systems management solutions. This position will be global in scope and requires a customer service focus. You will have responsibility for existing monitoring tools and be a key contributor during the transition to our open-source observability platform. You will work with business partners to understand requirements to provide robust solutions. You will have experience developing and deploying modern fault/performance/capacity alarm management systems and work with event correlation platforms for large organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, engineer and implement robust and cost-effective monitoring environments, using new technologies. In coordination with business partners, provide innovative observability solutions across all production and pre-production environments.
  • Lead a global L1/L2 support team providing guidance and defining operational processes.
  • Partner to help identify areas where existing capabilities and processes require change and where new ones need to be developed to meet future business demands.
  • Generate, assess, and improve alerting mechanisms with a focus on proactive alerting and self-healing.
  • Drive a high standard of quality and consistency across the observability environments by maintaining and improving the standards within the team and by supporting good practices.
  • Develop and maintain user documentation as it relates to observability configuration, mapping processes and service records.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience

Experience and Skills:

Required

  • Eight years’ experience in design and implementation of global, multi-platform enterprise monitoring solutions
  • Proven understanding of Linux and Windows Server operating systems
  • Proven understanding of scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, PowerShell, etc.) to automate tasks and analyze data
  • Understanding of commercial monitoring tools such as Microsoft SCOM, log management tools and Manager of Managers (MoM) such as Moogsoft AIOps
  • Experience with open-source metric collection and monitoring agents (such as Telegraf, Fluent Bit, Metric Beat, etc).
  • Experience with SQL, ability to write SQL queries to efficiently extract data from relational databases
  • Ability to view and understand logs to tackle complex issues
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement, staying up to date with the latest Observability and reliability trends and technologies
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support management and problem-solving functions of this role
  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills
  • Excellent judgment and discretion; ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and meet deadlines in high pressure scenarios
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and facilitating discussion to explore the best possible solutions
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate as a team
  • Flexibility to work with global teams as well as geographically dispersed US based teams

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in REST API and JSON usage as well as Web services
  • Experience with VictoriaMetrics or other metric datastore technologies
  • Experience with Grafana dashboards visualizations and Grafana Loki time series db
  • Solid understanding of automation tools like Ansible, Chef, Git/Bitbucket, etc.
  • Familiarity with modern logging frameworks and standard processes: Open telemetry, Kafka, Promtail, etc.

For candidates in the United States:

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $99,000 to $170,000.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
