Gas Engineering aids in the operations, maintenance, construction, and planning for $21 billion in gas assets that transport, store, compress, regulate, measure, and deliver gas to 4.6 million customers.
Position Summary:
The Gas Engineering staff provides engineering, testing and analysis services and expertise across multiple disciplines to various company organizations to identify, diagnose and solve technical problems. Designs and scales up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment, and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. Analyzes and develops solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. Develops and applies engineering standards and procedures, and provides advice on issues within the engineering field. Provides consultation and advice to clients proactively to avoid future problems by specifying equipment, materials and methods that are best practices in the industry. Services include inspections, failure analysis, performance assessments, and evaluations on a wide variety of systems and components ranging from steel materials to pipelines.
Gas IM Engineers may specialize in one or more areas including: Distribution Mains & Services, Customer Connected Equipment, Measurement & Control, Transmission Line Pipe, Compression & Processing, LNG & CNG Portable Supply, CNG Fueling Stations and Gas Storage:
- Determines, selects and implements technically feasible and economically viable alternatives for sustainment
- Analyzes and evaluates how to improve a system and/or equipment’s sustainability under continued operation, maintenance and unexpected change
- Supports in-service operating systems to ensure continued operation and maintenance and optimize throughput
- Develops design changes to resolve operational issues, introduces new materials and revises product, process and test specifications to enhance product quality, design integrity, reliability and manufacturability
- Collects and evaluates service use and maintenance data; conducts root cause analyses of in-service problems (e.g., operational hazards, deficiency reports, parts obsolescence, corrosion effects, reliability and maintainability trends, safety hazards, and failure causes and effects) and implements corrective action.
- Provides input for the continuous development and improvement of PG&E’s Integrity Management Program, pursuant with 49CFR192.
- Responsible for updating and improving PG&E’s Integrity Management Program and Risk Management Procedure RMP-15
- Responsible for developing, implementing, and tracking any recommendations resulting from risk analysis and overall program.
- Participates in various Integrity Management Threat Committees and Technical Teams
- Partners with many key internal stakeholders such as Gas System Operations, Codes and Standards, Damage Prevention, and Gas Asset Engineering.
- Provides integrity management subject matter expert support for various assets and input to other Gas Operations organizations
- Will contribute toward Gas Safety Excellence goals by improving safety, reliability and affordability for one or more asset families and one or more life cycles.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
- Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area) $128,000.00
- Mid Base Salary (Bay Area) $173,000.00
- Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area) $218,000.00
Responsibilities:
- Independently performs routine engineering analysis and performs lead role in determining scope, schedule, budget and resources needed. Prepares cost and materials estimates for use in client bid proposals.
- Assists senior peers on more complex tests and projects, participating in planning, budgeting and testing.
- Begins to develop knowledge in other areas of specialty/discipline or continues to focus on one area and increases depth of knowledge.
- Completes multiple projects concurrently. Prepares tests and studies. Evaluates performance of parts, assemblies or systems under simulated operating conditions. Records results and makes recommendations based on findings.
- Collaborates with peers to prepare technical reports and specifications and to identify, define, and solve problems.
- May review test design of Associate level engineers to determine effectiveness and if objectives of project will be obtained.
- Develops test protocols, models, test technologies and analyzes data. May assist in the development of technical policies and procedures.
- Participates in identifying innovations and cost-reduction potential of new and existing technologies.
- May interface with clients regarding status of project or to collect more information. Ensures client expectations for project are met.
- Travel required; frequency depends on assignment (minimal).
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors’ degree in Engineering with emphasis on related/assigned discipline (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.)
- 5 years’ experience in gas transmission or distribution design, operations, and/or maintenance environment
Desired Qualifications:
- PE – Professional Engineer license
- 1 year of Natural Gas or Petroleum experience
- Knowledge of gas distribution and transmission engineering, operations, construction, and maintenance aspects of the gas utility business
- Basic knowledge of Risk and/or Integrity Management
- Operations/field experience
- Basic knowledge in pipeline construction
- Basic knowledge of material properties, performance characteristics, and fabrication
- Basic knowledge of welding practices
- Basic knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and corrosion control
- Basic knowledge of 49 CFR Part 192, CPUC GO 112E
- Basic knowledge of budget and Project Management experience
- Proficiency in engineering research and testing concepts, theories, practices, methods, techniques.
