Amazon Web Services is seeking a High Voltage (HV) / Medium Voltage (MV) Technical Program Manager (TPM) to become part of a global Datacenter Engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation of HV/MV substations and new technologies such as Fuel Cells, Battery and Hydrogen Energy Storage, and related infrastructure associated with our rapidly expanding data center foot print. If you can design and project manage an electrical substation, understand the unique needs of data centers and are familiar with the constructability of varying designs you may be a good fit. The candidate must be able to manage multiple large-scale power infrastructure projects across different countries.
The candidate will also be required to evaluate data center sites & develop power infrastructure (generation, transmission or energy storage) strategies to serve those sites. The candidate will work with internal & external stakeholders including AWS engineering, infra energy, real estate, planning teams, contractors, design consultants etc. to deliver his/her responsibilities. In addition to HV/ MV strategic program management, this role will include support with development of energy strategies to scale our grid connected data centers, identify and analyze energy generation and storage technologies and innovations, support the design, execution and implementation of sustainable power solutions and maintain a deep understanding of barriers to growth and risks associated with the energy sector as we develop products and projects to support our customers.

As a TPM at Amazon you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, and contractors.
Amazon has a global presence. 25% travel will be expected as part of this role. International support will be part of the job, and some domestic and international travel may be necessary. Support could consist of working on international teams and could require developing over-arching business cases with technical document packages. An understanding of international electrical design requirements is preferred but not necessary.
Key job responsibilities
• Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable solutions.
• Manage multi-year generating substation/ switchyard and transmission substation needs.
• Own Data center HV/MV design strategy and collaborate with other disciplines to create a global program strategy.
• Facilitate standardization, development, and continuous auditing of substation specifications, substation equipment factory test scripts, commissioning scripts with DCE Principal and global Engineers, HV Design Engineering teams and external consultants/ OEMs.
• Own and drive roadmap to sustainable HV Substation designs without SF6 greenhouse gas.
• Find endemic problems and work to resolve by developing business justification and coordinating global cross-functional resources to enable development of power distribution or control system products, providing sustainability, capacity, and availability benefits.
• Author scope of work (SOW) documents and approve/ onboard substation equipment vendors and consultants.
• Own and manage program funding cycle and over-arching Net Present Value (NPV) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) models.
• Drive and own Substation forecast and energization dashboards informing prioritization of most impactful business needs. Basic understanding of data analytics, Python, Tableau, Salesforce is required.
• Provide monthly global program reporting to executive leadership, mitigating risks and escalating blockers to substation capacity delivery.
• Provide clear line of sight to our partners in procurement in order to secure substation Long Lead Equipment. • Build and/or improve mechanisms to forecast utility capacity to influence design/ delivery of substation projects and associated power quality.
• Participate in site walks, substation energization, factory and field testing and informing lessons learned and continuous improvement of the DC HV BOD.
• Lead program management of onsite power generation projects, enabling integration with substation designs, engaging cross-functional internal teams, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and consultants.
• Be a high judgement leader within the global group as well as within internal and external teams that support Amazon’s data centers.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in an Electrical Engineering
• 8+ years of experience with power systems and mission critical electrical design with and emphasis of HV/MV design.
• Experience planning, engineering, developing or constructing HV substations at transmission voltages up to 500 kV, MV substations, power generation and distribution Infrastructure at voltages up to 35 kV.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree
• Excellent understanding of the various code requirements globally, including NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI, NERC, IEC, ISO.
• Fundamental understanding of critical HV, MV and LV electrical equipment and relay protection schemes.
• Detailed understanding of HV/MV system modelling, relays, protections schemes, high-voltage circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers electrical switchgear, grounding.
• Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills
• Lead program reviews and meetings, managing budget, blockers to success, risk, and mitigations. Possess leadership and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center data center infrastructure equipment and facilities.
• Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment/construction.
• Possess strong organizational, communication and team building skills. Must build strong working relationships, both internally and externally stakeholders.
• An ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability, availability, operability, expandability and maintainability.
• The ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.
• Professional Engineer (PE) License
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent.
• Substation design and operations experience.
• Experience in transmission line design for both aerial and underground working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
• Experience with IT infrastructure, data centers and cloud services.
• Previous consultant negotiation and management skills associated with design, construction and project execution.
• Experience with fast-track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.
• Experience with large scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.
• Knowledge of building codes and regulations.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $118,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
