Sr. Policy Manager, Goodreads

The Goodreads mission is to “Help people discover books they love and get more out of reading.” With 150MM users worldwide, Goodreads is the world’s largest community of readers.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Policy Manager to own our policy strategy for reducing abuse and content risk for the business. In this role you will have two key strategic functions. First, you’ll be responsible for development of all abuse and content policies for Goodreads which aim to protect customers and the Goodreads brand. Second, you’ll collaborate closely with product and business leaders to identify and mitigate abuse within the customer experience.

Vision is critical, and in this role you’ll set the direction for Goodreads policy, own prioritization of new initiatives, and ensure delivery against highly visible goals that impact the entire organization. You’ll be a trusted senior advisor to Operations, business leaders, Books executives, PR, and Legal on high-risk escalations, and are a primary stakeholder and influencer on product and technology investments related to abuse and content risks.

Most critically, you’ll help Goodreads strike the right balance between mitigating unwanted content and behavior while protecting the user expression and engagement that is the key to Goodreads’ success.

Key job responsibilities

Core responsibilities include:

Lead the development and improvement of community guidelines and internal policies, based on a deep understanding of community needs and principles of inclusion and equity

Anticipate sources of abuse and drive solutions within the product and key Goodreads programs

Influence product teams to incorporate risk mitigation into the product development process, and build and improve abuse detection, analytics, and internal moderation tools

Serve as an owner and advisor on high-risk escalations, and evangelize broader risk mitigation needs with business leaders

Drive cross-Amazon policy initiatives on behalf of Goodreads

A day in the life

This role is dynamic and no day is the same. That said, in a given day you may collaborate with your team, Product, PR, Operations and partners in the Books org to develop or revise policies related to book content or community engagement. You may work with Product, Engineering and Design to provide business requirements to build tech solutions to keep our community safe. You’ll have 1:1s with your stakeholders and Ops partners. And you’ll have a balance of meetings and time to do deep thinking.
