The Senior Utility Worker administers and coordinates the activities of the Lake County Sheriff’s fleet in support of policies, goals and objectives established by the Sheriff.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure all vehicles are in working order and are stocked with all proper equipment.
  • Co-ordinate with vendor on installation of police equipment in new vehicles
  • stripe and letter new vehicles
  • prepare the vehicles for auction upon completion of service.
  • Co-ordinate with DOT on regular scheduled maintenance for fleet vehicles and distribute scheduled maintenance to employees.
  • Directing the operation of the fleet management information system
  • Establish and standardize vehicle replacement policies, subject to Sheriff’s approval, and develop preventative maintenance programs
  • Conduct cost-effective procurement, resource utilization, budget, and project cost analysis
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required

  • Extensive knowledge of the professional and technical standards of fleet and facilities management
  • Extensive knowledge of current trends and technological developments pertaining to procurement, utilization, operation, budget/cost allocation, and fuel/maintenance Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of management, budgeting, and cost control
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of automotive repair shop management
  • Knowledge of applicable U.S. Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Extensive knowledge of fleet purchasing
  • Excellent skill in public and employee relations while maintaining effective working relationships
  • Skill in business practices applicable to fleet and facilities management (i.e., system analysis, computer utilization, and financial record keeping);
  • Ability to develop, plan, organize, and manage a complex centralized fleet management program
  • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive oral and written reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted through the course of work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Education and/or other requirements:

  • Requires High school, GED or specialized vocational training.

Utility Workers are members of Fraternal Order of Police.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear for extended periods.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and lift and/or move up to 50 to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
