Position: BayLegal’s San Francisco Economic Justice / Social Security Disability Advocacy practice team represent San Franciscans who are unhoused with public benefits claims – primarily, eligibility for Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) with a focus on homelessness, disability rights, and economic justice. The position requires regular outreach and intake at city homeless shelters, and partner organizations, as well as travel in the city/county as necessary to best serve our clients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn and advocate for the diverse legal rights of underserved communities in San Francisco County and the broader Bay Area to reduce homelessness, enhance economic and housing stability, and promote social justice;
- Represent clients in a range of public benefits matters, including Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), CalWORKs, CalFresh, and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) claims and appeals and to access other county, state, and federal benefit programs, as needed;
- Represent clients in all stages of administrative proceedings related to their public benefits claims, from initial applications through federal court.
- Conduct intake and screening of other related legal issues and work collaboratively with other BayLegal experts to assist with legal matters within BayLegal’s practice areas to advance the interest of clients;
- Identify and help employ impact advocacy strategies to remove systematic legal barriers for client populations, including particularly vulnerable groups such as immigrants and refugees, survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, people experiencing homelessness, and people with disabilities;
- Engage in and continue to develop relationships and collaborations with community partners, including governmental agencies and community-based organizations, to outreach to clients, ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing BayLegal’s client and community;
- Provide trainings, workshops, technical assistance, and Know Your Rights to client communities, community partners, and colleagues on public benefits, disability advocacy and a broad range of civil legal issues.
- Engage in other tasks and projects that further BayLegal’s mission.
Requirements/Qualifications/About the Successful Candidate:
- Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency
- Membership in the California State Bar, or admitted to practice in another state and eligible to practice in California for 3 years under the California State Bar rules for the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program (must pass CA bar at a later date)
- Three years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Experience providing direct legal services, including court room experience
- Multi-lingual in languages commonly spoken by our client communities preferred
- Experience organizing time, managing diverse activities, and meeting critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented
- Sense of humor, curious and self-directed
- Demonstrated experience simultaneously managing cases in different practice areas.

This is a union position (Bay Area Legal Aid Workers, “BALAW”), and the salary ranges from $74,629-$138,127 depending on years of experience.
