This position will be a lead role for an existing early innovation project which has received extremely positive feedback from stakeholders including the CTO. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with other world class innovators and understand the dynamics of building new technology in a ‘startup like’ context within a large and mature company. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months
you will work toward completing?
Within your first 6 months
- You will join an existing team working on a release of the innovation project within the next 4 months.
- As part of this team, you will be expected to work with the team lead, team members and internal and external stakeholders including product management, customers, principal engineers and architects across the company.
- You will be developing software towards a live SAAS security analytics Kubernetes-based platform including Kafka, Redis and ElasticSearch components.
- You will be expected to gain an understanding of and contribute code across several parts of the technology stack of the product including eBPF, distributed tracing, network security, Kubernetes, cloud-native technologies and machine learning operations.
- You will be expected to help mentor and lead members of the team providing technical and career leadership.
- You will be expected to helpdemo the product, write blogs, give talks and work towards the filing of patents.
- You will be expected to encourage good engineering practices in the team.
- You will be expected to be part of an on-call rotation for the SAAS offering.
- You will be expected to drive progress working past technical blockers, making informed trade-offs and deciding areas to prioritize given constraints as needed in a fast-paced innovation environment.
- You will be working with public and private cloud services platforms including
Amazon AWS.
After 6 months+
- You will be responsible for designing and delivering the supporting infrastructure
functions to deliver your solutions at cloud-scale, including features such as
usage tracking, throttling, monitoring, and alerting. - You will be regularly evaluated on the quality of the product you create and the
code you write to ensure continued advancement of your technical skills in an
environment that looks to expand them.

The successful candidate will be expected to write design documents, code, perform code reviews and work closely with the development team. Additionally, the successful candidate will be able to help debug and troubleshoot production issues as well as demo the product to internal teams and customers.

The Hiring Manager for this role is Dennis Ramdass, Director, xLabs Engineering, who has been with VMware for over 4 years with 15 years of industry experience as an individual contributor and engineering leader. Dennis worked at a startup for 4 years which was eventually acquired by VMware. Dennis’s management style is focused on empowering the team by removing blockers while encouraging innovation, collective responsibility and a collaborative, inclusive team culture.
Where is this role located?
This role is flexible with a primary location at VMware headquarters in Palo Alto but the option for remote work is available.

For US based candidates, the annual pay range (OTE for commissioned roles; Salary for other roles) for this position is: $139,000 – $331,000. The actual offer will be based on the role, location, and individual candidate experience. Bonus, commission, and/or equity may be eligible for this position.
