About the Responsibilities

To provide legal advice and counsel to the Central Arizona Project (CAP) management on a wide range of legal issues relating to water resources, contracts, legislation, court decisions and agency actions; prepare legal documents; represent the CAP in negotiations, administrative proceedings, and litigation with federal, state and local governments and private parties.

Some of the duties include:

  • Provides legal advice on matters relating to water law, the law of the Colorado River, Native American water rights, contracts, legislation, court decisions, regulations, and administrative agency actions.
  • Negotiates, prepares, and reviews contracts, land use agreements, pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Represents and advises the CAP, and supervises outside counsel, with respect to pending or potential administrative and judicial proceedings.
  • Represents the CAP in negotiations with other local, state and federal agencies, and private parties.
  • Assists CAP management in developing policies to govern CAP activities and represents the CAP in discussions with other entities regarding the development of such policies.

About the Qualifications

For the Staff Attorney:

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with a minimum of two (2) years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, corporation or government agency working in the areas of water law, contract law, tort law, real estate law, employment law, administrative law, and/or litigation.

For the Senior Attorney:

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, corporation or government agency working in the areas of water law, contract law, tort law, real estate law, employment law, administrative law and/or litigation, including three (3) years of experience working with and advising middle to upper level management personnel.

Required Certifications or Licenses for both positions:
Must be licensed to practice law in Arizona and a member in good standing of the State Bar of Arizona, admitted to practice law before all courts in the state of Arizona.

Knowledge of Arizona water law, the law of the Colorado River, and Native American water rights is a plus.
