DESCRIPTION

The department of Medicine is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellow and postdocs and 479 staff personnel. Total Clinical Revenues total over $33.8M with annual expenditures of $179.4M. Facilities planning and management covers over 145,000 square feet.

Under supervision assist with research on the interaction between bacteria and the gastrointestinal immune system in mouse models. This includes; assisting in in-vitro assays in the evaluation of T cell responses to gastrointestinal infections, maintenance of, and in-vitro assays using, mammalian cell lines and bacteria, infection of mice with BSL2 agents, QPCR to evaluate expression levels following exposure to infectious agents. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to culture, enumerate bacteria for in-vitro assays and animal infections.
  • Excellent skills in record keeping.
  • Ability to participate in the execution of research projects through planning, organizing and performing of experiments and preparing data for review.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform Western blots and ELISAs.
  • Experience in working with small lab animals, including surgeries, infections, euthanasia, and autopsies.
  • Ability to order and maintain laboratory supplies and consumables.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and protocols.
  • Proven ability to extract RNA, DNA, and proteins from collected tissues and bacteria.
  • Knowledge of MSDS’s (Material Data Safety Sheets) and the hazard communication and Injury and Illness and Prevention Program (IIPP). Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing, safe handling of chemicals, and the use of protective items, with the ability to train and oversee others.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge with PCR and QPCR techniques.
  • Experience with cell sorting techniques.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be willing to work with mice and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.
  • Must be willing and able to work safely with BL2 level bacterial preparations.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 – $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 – $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
