DESCRIPTION
This is a part-time position with our Parks & Recreation department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Stage Assistant assists in planning and implementing theatrical activities and provides clerical support to professional theatre staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from senior staff. Stage Assistant I will generally not supervise any staff member. Stage Assistant II will act as team leader in their specific area. Stage Assistant III is more administratively oriented and will assist in supervision of Stage Assistant I and II.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform a variety of duties related to the planning and implementation of theatrical activities; administer one or more assigned areas of responsibility.

Assist with the set-up and safety of the stage and theatre for planned activities.

Complete rental reservations, track reservation progress, recognize and resolve minor reservation issues.

Assist with basic marketing and promotions.

Conduct auditions for community productions.

Prepare classrooms for use; set up and take down tables and chairs; assist with youth programs and theatre camps.

Assist with general clerical duties including ticket and concession sales, program registration, handling payments, updating/creating documents, and filing.

Answer questions from program participants and the public by telephone and in person.

Assist in technical work relating to audio, lighting, and stage management such as operating audio or lighting equipment, conducting scene changes during performances, directing performers, and constructing set pieces and props.

Ensure all students, performance attendees, and renters conform to the established policies and procedures; maintain backstage procedures.

Assist with basic facility maintenance.

Maintain adequate supplies and inventory; assist with budgeting for assigned areas of responsibility.

Perform related duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING / LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

STAGE ASSISTANT I
Experience:
Some experience in working in a theatrical environment is highly desirable.

Training:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

STAGE ASSISTANT II
Experience:
Two years of experience in working in a theatrical environment.

Training:
Completion of some college courses in a related field is highly desirable.

STAGE ASSISTANT III
Experience:
Three years of experience in working with children or young adults in a recreational environment.

Training:
Completion of some college courses in a related field.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and legally required vehicle insurance. Must also be able to meet driving record standards set by the city’s driving policy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
STAGE ASSISTANT I
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, procedures and practices of theatre.

Basic principles and practices of working with children and young adults.

Basic principles and practices of coordinating activities.

Safe work practices.

Ability to:
Learn the principles and objectives of theatre.

Deal effectively with a variety of groups and individuals.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Use professional speech while conducting City business with the public.

Use proper grammar and sentence construction when preparing written materials.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Work varying schedules including weekends and evenings. The work schedule varies and is dictated by uses of the Palmdale Playhouse.

Lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, sit, walk on uneven ground as required by programs.

Provide technical direction to lower level staff.

STAGE ASSISTANT II
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the duties required of a Stage Assistant I plus the ability to give direction to lower level staff.

Knowledge of:
Methods, procedures and practices of theatre.

Principles and practices of working with children and young adults.

Principles and practices of coordinating activities.

Ability to:
Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

STAGE ASSISTANT III
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the duties required of a Stage Assistant I and II plus the ability to develop programs and work in an administrative capacity including resolving the more minor issues with the public and with staff.

Knowledge of:
Methods, procedures and practices of theatre.

Principles and practices of working with children and young adults.

Principles and practices of coordinating activities.

Ability to:
Learn the principles and objectives of recreational activities.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Deal effectively with a variety of groups and individuals.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, and sitting; occasional climbing, bending, standing, and squatting. Lifting: frequently up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds; pushing and pulling up to 80 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision, color and depth vision; frequent reading and close-up work. Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone. Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to noise.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a temperature controlled office and theatre environment subject to noise, machinery and moving objects. Positions may require occasional overtime. Positions are required to work nights, holidays, and weekends; travel is rare.

MILEAGE PAY: Any employee may be reimbursed for work related mileage at 54 cents per mile when assigned to use their private vehicle on City business.

SOCIAL SECURITY: The City does not participate in Social Security, and does not deduct Social Security payments from any employee’s salary. The City does deduct 1.45% of salary for Medicare & makes a 1.45% matching contribution.
