Position Announcement
The Stage Lighting Technician supports lighting needs for productions by the School of the Arts Events and Production Services (EPS), including the disciplines of Dance, Music, Theatre, and Art & Design. Duties will include participating in and leading part time staff of professional and student electricians for load-in, technical rehearsals, and load-out of all productions.

Under the direction of the Lighting Manager, the Stage Lighting Technician works to ensure the safe and timely implementation of theatrical lighting and systems for the School of the Arts productions.
Summary of Responsibilities

  • 40% Participates in teams to setup, maintain, and dismantle light fixtures, and the associated lighting electrical and rigging equipment used for live productions. Focus and operate light fixtures, attach color filters and other lighting accessories. Leads crews as assigned and assists with their training.
  • 20% Programs and/or operates lighting consoles for live productions in any of the Noorda Center venues.
  • 10% Troubleshoots lighting systems. Monitors assigned productions.
  • 10% Repairs equipment and maintains the shop and storage spaces clean and functional.
  • 10% Assists and teaches student employees and lab students in practical production experiences.
  • 10% Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate’s degree plus one year of experience in a related field or any combination of education and/or experience related to the position classification summary totaling a minimum of three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus three years of professional level experience in Summary of Duties or equivalent education and experience totaling seven years.
  • ETCP Entertainment Electrician certification desired.
  • Experience in a multi-venue University Arts Center is a big plus.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Understanding of the maintenance, operation and installation of theatrical lighting equipment and systems.
  • Moderate knowledge and experience with programming and operating ETC Eos family lighting consoles.
  • Knowledge of intelligent equipment including LED and moving lights.
  • Knowledge of integrated lighting networks, particularly ETC Net3.
  • Knowledge of video projection and Q-Lab a plus.
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution.
  • Familiarity with Lightwright and Vectorworks.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Moderate skills in reading and executing theatrical light plots.
  • Basic skill in troubleshooting lighting systems and plots to the component level.
  • Basic skills in repairing and maintaining theatrical lighting equipment and systems.
  • Skilled at creating and working with practicals and special effects, including installing and controlling LEDs. Coordinate work with scenic and property shops.
  • As appropriate, collaborate with staff in other units and divisions to achieve the goals of the school.
  • Good computer skills and use of spreadsheets, calendars, and time management applications.
  • Good organizational skills; deadline driven with proven ability to manage changing priorities.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to keeping work spaces organized and clean.
  • Lighting design skills are a plus. Opportunities for design if qualified.
  • Basic skills in assessing the physical, electrical, and data needs from lighting designers’ drawings.
  • Ability to work with large scale rental packages.
  • Experience with lighting for live entertainment across a variety of performance genres including various styles of dance (modern, ballet, ballroom, etc), opera, musical theatre, drama, outdoor performances, concerts (classical, contemporary, jazz, headliner), etc.
  • Ability to work comfortably at heights using ladders, lifts and fall arrest equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds solo and heavier with assistance.
  • Ability to work with additional lighting consoles, including Hog 4 and / or GrandMA is a plus.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and apply them to production challenges.
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including nights and weekends. (Most Sundays are dark, but occasionally Sunday work cannot be avoided.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
  • Must be able to lead teams to accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with students and part-time employees of varied skills. Training as required and supervising effectively.
  • Ability to cross over and assist in all areas of theatrical production.
