Location: Oak Ridge, TN
*Salary Range: $16.96 – $22.68 per hour
PURPOSE: Intern will receive training in recruiting and outreach, communications, and engagement for ORISE STEM-WD programs and serve as a member of a collaborative team focused on communicating, developing, and enhancing the value of the ORISE experience and creating a diverse and collaborative community designed to support the future of STEM.
Responsibilities
- Assists STEM WD staff in outreach and engagement of applicants to ORISE workforce development opportunities with a focus on niche, targeted, hard-to-fill, underrepresented, or other key audiences. Duties may include but are not limited to:

- Assists in creating outreach and communication materials and resources, such as websites, videos, social media, opportunity and event postings, and email communications, with special emphasis on attracting a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants.
- Assists with in person and virtual information sessions, webinars/seminars, conferences, university events, and other opportunities to showcase ORISE research participation programs.
- Develops contact lists targeting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Minority Service Institutions (MSI) for outreach and assists with tracking data and evaluating return on investments.
- Identifies and develops virtual resources, contact lists, and posting sources to reach a diverse pool of candidates such as, but not limited to, university listings, graduate and postdoctoral listings, contacts for key academic and discipline levels, job board sites, etc.
- Supports the STEM WD DEIA team in identifying, developing, and implementing outreach, recruiting and engagement events, resources and marketing materials, and professional development content that increase awareness of the ORISE Experience and the value of participation in an ORISE research participant internship or fellowship for federal workforce development to MSI and/or underrepresented students, alumni, faculty and staff.
- Represents ORISE STEM WD and supports and participates in activities related to outreach, recruiting, and ORISE community events, both in person and virtual, including interacting with potential applicants, participants, alumni, mentors, sponsors, and staff. Serves on teams and committees and on special projects.
- Provides outstanding customer service by monitoring multiple email boxes and virtual platforms for general inquiries, registration approvals, and communication.
- Identifies, researches, and develops special projects related to communication, engagement, or outreach interests to add value to ORISE STEM WD with presentation to leadership.
Qualifications
High school diploma and 2-4 years of job related experience. Bachelor’s highly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
- Requires academic and career interest in outreach and recruiting, marketing, communication, training, and development, with special focus on diversity activities.
- Strong skills in writing and editing, multi-tasking, organization, strategic and creative thinking, and ability to work productively in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment.
- Preferred knowledge of social media engagement, video or digital media, graphic design, event planning.
*The candidate’s starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate’s qualifications to determine salary.
