Streets Maintenance Crew Lead Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Public Works Deputy Director, the Street Operations Crew Leader performs a variety of supervisory and administrative duties. Responsible for daily work distribution and maintaining work schedules. Provides action items for short- and long-term projects. Evaluates field problems and develops solutions to accomplish efficient completion of assigned tasks. Evaluates staffing and participates in staffing decisions. Exercises close supervision and provide technical instruction to crew.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates staffing requirements. Monitors and evaluates employee performance and identifies needs for professional development.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
  • Schedules daily activities and assigns personnel. Evaluates field problems and develops solutions to accomplish efficient completion of assigned tasks.
  • Establishes daily check list forms for equipment.
  • Monitors material usage, personnel and time required to complete a project. Prepares reports concerning the job assignment and related activities.
  • Provides input on personnel issues, including hiring and discipline. Review and submit to department head all employee request regarding sick leave, vacations, overtime, and compensatory time.
  • Orders materials and supplies for projects. Maintains department’s inventory.
  • Renders prompt, efficient and courteous service to promote goodwill between the Town and the public.
  • Develops and promotes adherence to appropriate safety rules, regulations, and practices.
  • Promotes teamwork and encourages an atmosphere that will stimulate and exchange of ideas, information, and job experience within the department.
  • Assists Department Head in preparation of annual Public Works budget.
  • Document weekly safety meetings. Ensures safety procedures are taught to new hires.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be a proficient equipment operator that includes but not limited to the following: road grader, loader, dump truck, skidsteer, backhoe, excavator, compaction equipment, power and static hand tools, and various snowplow equipment.

  • Understanding requirements and determining contours for grade and slope applications. Ability to set grade and slope hubs/stakes.
  • Understanding material specifications and proper installation.
  • Knowledge of safety awareness when operating or mobilizing of heavy equipment.
  • Working knowledge of common hazards and safety precautions necessary for public works operation
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of street and storm maintenance construction.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat and/or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be very loud at times.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must lift/carry up to 60 lbs. frequently and occasionally lift/carry over 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, Peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or general education degree (GED).
  • Four plus years of experience in Public Works Department or equivalent applicable work experience.
  • Experience as a senior maintenance worker in a Public Works Department, preferably within a streets department.
  • Possess a minimum of a class “B” Colorado operators (drivers) license with airbrake and tanker endorsements.

  • Must be a proficient equipment operator that includes but not limited to the following: road grader, loader, dump truck, skidsteer, backhoe, excavator, compaction equipment, power and static hand tools, and various snowplow equipment.

  • First Aid and CPR, or attainable within six-months from date of hire.
  • Flagger Certification or attainable within six-months from date of hire.
  • Traffic control supervisor certification or attainable within two years of hire.

Expected Hiring pay: $60,000 – $73,425
