Position Description

The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) is seeking an experienced professional to join our team as a Structural Plans Engineer (Journey). This is a unique opportunity for a structural engineering professional to be part of the City of Seattle’s future. This position is part of the Engineering Services Division.

Job Responsibilities
This is a challenging position in a fast-paced work environment. Journey Structural Plans Engineers will:

  • Review plans, reports and calculations for a variety of construction permit applications ranging from single-family homes to mid-rise podium building structures;
  • Ensure structural and ordinance compliance with adopted construction codes (such as the Seattle Building and Residential Codes and generally accepted construction principles;
  • prepare written correction letters;
  • meet with applicants to clarify requirements, and approve applications for permit issuance. Structural plans engineers may also be assigned to coach architects, designers, contractors, and the general public regarding construction codes and processes;
  • advise inspectors on field related concerns;
  • investigate materials and methods of construction;
  • prepare reports and assist in clarifying code interpretations.

Journey level SPEs will be capable of working mostly independently on larger projects with more complex structural code issues to assess.
Qualifications
Journey Structural Plans Engineer: Requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field that includes significant structural engineering coursework and three years of professional structural engineering experience (or a combination of education, training and/or experience that provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington is desired for the Journey level.

Applicants for this position must have the ability to read construction plans, read and apply code language, perform applicable mathematical calculations and understand structural engineering principles. Applicants must work well in a fast-paced, results oriented, team environment with the ability to think quickly and independently. Strong communication skills, collaborative working style and the ability to handle stressful situations in a positive manner is a must. International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Building Plans Examiner preferred.
