The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences seeks a Student Affairs Officer for Student Life and Well-being to assist with various student life and well-being initiatives. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Life and Well-being.
Responsibilities
Student Groups and Programming (35%)
- Serving as primary point of contact for graduate student groups in the Arts and Sciences, and in particular, the Executive Board of the Arts & Sciences Graduate Council (ASGC). Working with the ASGC to plan programs and monitor the budget. With GSAS colleagues (Student Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, Professional Development, Alumni Relations), helping to create and oversee professional development structures and programming for student groups and student leaders;
- Assisting with the planning and logistics of large-scale events for students, such as orientation and convocation.
Student Well-being and Support (35%)
- Collaborating with Assistant Dean to develop and implement improved tracking and record-keeping systems for students of concern, housing, disability accommodations, and other key well-being areas;
- Implementing student disability accommodations in collaboration with Assistant Dean: arranging for note taking services and scheduling/proctoring exams, communicating with instructors, and maintaining records.
Administrative (20%)
- Managing library carrel assignments: coordinating assignments with academic departments and library staff, communicating with assigned students, tracking concerns and addressing facilities or individual assignment issues;
- Tracking and managing compliance for university-wide initiatives, including Title IX and Sexual Violence Response trainings, pre-arrival tutorials, and other required programming: communicating with non-compliant students, trouble-shooting basic technical issues, and working with the Assistant Dean when individual concerns arise.
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
- Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested, including but not limited to: assisting with school- and university-wide events and programs (sometimes scheduled outside of normal 9am-5pm hours), providing support as needed within the Office of Student Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent related experience required;
- The candidate must be able to manage sensitive and confidential information, demonstrate excellent written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills;
- The candidate should be familiar with or have the ability to learn and use student software and management systems;
- The candidate should also be familiar with the challenges international graduate students face;
- Ability to perform off-hour work on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications
- A masters in a relevant graduate degree program in education, social work, or a related field is preferred.
