Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
The Future of Work is a research area, that seeks to investigate how organizations, institutions and businesses will work and collaborate in the future. It is a study of the future, in principle, but similar to any study, it has a history. This project aims to research the historical periods and eras when organizations raised concerns about the future of creative work, and investigated the nature of the creative work and collaborations in the future. Some examples include the study of how automation and remote work, changed the dynamics and meaning of creative work and the way we collaborate (Malone, 2004, Hern, 2020). In this study we would like to focus specifically on the “creatives” as a subject and a category of labor, and “creative work” as the specific kind of work. The creatives in this project are defined as any individual or group of persons whose primary occupation are within creative industries, crafts, literature, arts and design.
Responsibilities
In the light of recent layoffs in big tech companies (e.g. Google), and the substantial improvements in Generative and creative AI, the project requires research on:
(1) Identify relevant historical periods of Future of Work in relation to the introduction of new machines and technologies (e.g., photocopy machine, typewriter, knitting machine, printer, Adobe software, digital camera, etc.).
(2) Offer a focused literature review of the published works in the area of future of work and to categorize them based on the area of contributions (e.g., sociology of work, politics of labor, innovation studies, women/gender studies, etc.).
The topic of Future of Work is very timely, especially with the advancement of AI and Generative AI. The Student Fellow will be exposed to a timely topic, which would help them to explore new and contemporary terrains of research & they will help to prepare the background section of a grant proposal.
