Position Summary
As the Advising and Retention Coordinator within the Student Success Center at Southeast Technical College (STC), this individual is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in executing a data-driven strategy to ensure students’ success. As a Student Success Advisor (SSA), this individual teaches the Student Success Seminar, case manages students and provides them guidance and support throughout their academic journey.
Essential Functions
- Provide advising services to students, including, but not limited to, the following: academic programs and policies; registration; drop/add paperwork; withdrawal paperwork; change program paperwork; academic appeal paperwork; transfer options; and on and off-campus resources.
- Assist the Director of Student Success and Registrar with the training of Student Success Advisors and monitoring and updating advisor caseloads.
- Assist the Director of Student Success and Registrar with advising and retention campaigns using Navigate and track stats to maximize results.
- Provide leadership for the Student Success Seminar 100 course to ensure curriculum is relevant and impactful for students.
- Teach SSS100, including the potential of instructing SSS100 for Avera Academy and Classroom to Careers, as well as other high school related partnerships between STC and area school districts and specialized programs.
- Serve as the Student Success Advisor (i.e., the case manager) for students taught in SSS100 sections.
- Develop advising and retention programming and training for students and employees.
- Confer with instructors, outside agencies, other campus departments, and administrators to resolve3 students’ behavioral, economic, social, academic, and other issues.
- Counsel students to help them understand and overcome personal, social, economic, or behavioral barriers impacting their academic success.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, South Dakota Board of Technical Education policies, Build Dakota Scholarship Board policies, and STC policies and procedures.
- Prepare reports as required by administration.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
- Assist Student Success Center colleagues as needed with students, job fairs, classes activities, and more.
- Seek professional development opportunities to stay abreast of best practices in the field of teaching, advising, student success, and student affairs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree required.
- Experience: Three to five years related post-secondary work experience of advising and retaining students preferred.

- Computer skills: Ability to use email systems, word processing, and spreadsheet software

Physical Demands and Work Environment
General office environment with standard office equipment available. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Moderate noise levels typical of an office environment due to staff and student conversations and office equipment. Job is sedentary with physical activities normally required in an office environment. Possible temperature changes as individuals enter and exit the building.
