Student Support Specialist – Youth Tutoring

Overview

$27 per hour. This is a Temporary Part-time position.

Preference given to applicants with one year or more of experience as an instructional assistant or similar position in an elementary school classroom, afterschool program or summer program; and skills and training in Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports and Restorative Justice practices.

Program Description

The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for first through twelfth-grade scholars who live in six low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. Started as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority in 1991, the tutoring centers provide youth with a safe, positive, and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success.

Position Description

Catholic Community Services seeks a program assistant to support elementary school summer learning program activities for a six-week summer program July 10h – August 18th, 2023. The Scholar Support Specialist (SSS) will support Social Emotional Learning with individual scholars and/or small groups as needed throughout the summer and will be called upon to intervene, redirect and support scholars struggling behaviorally. Activities will include positive behavior interventions, supporting conflict resolution, and being available in-person to support scholars as needed. The SSS will be responsible for taking and tracking scholar attendance and communicating with families about absences and behavior as needed. This position will also be responsible for implementing and tracking the summer program’s incentive system. The SSS will ensure that incentive points are given out and tracked accurately, and will keep a running total of each individual scholar’s total score. The SSS will also facilitate a weekly reward distribution day for scholars. This position will also support the Center Supervisor with supervision of scholars during learning and enrichment activities, and with tasks such as distributing learning materials and supplies, and supporting families as needed with schedules and other program concerns.

The Student Support Specialist will work 15 hours a week, Monday through Thursday, for the six-week summer program. 15 hours of orientation and preparation time will be provided from July 3rd – July 7th. Details TBD.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Work individually and in small groups with scholars struggling behaviorally.
  • Support social-emotional learning of scholars in the program.
  • Support with supervision of scholars during learning and enrichment activities throughout the week.
  • Implement and track incentive system for program.
  • Facilitate a weekly reward distribution for scholars.
  • Contribute to a positive program-wide culture and behavioral norms.
  • Assist with snack, supplies, and other tasks as needed.

  • Experience working with scholars in an educational setting.
  • Cultural competence in working with diverse scholars.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Strong technology skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to development and supporting values of a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required before employment.
