Summary

We are looking for students to hire into Pathways Intern Program. This program facilitates the college-to-career transition by providing opportunities in a variety of career tracks.

Location of position: Public Buildings Service, Design & Construction Division, Interior Design Section, Philadelphia, PA.

At this time we are only filling one vacancy, however additional vacancies may be filled from this announcement as needed.

This job is open to

  • Students

    Current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level. Includes internships, pathways and other student programs.

Clarification from the agency

Current students enrolled at least half-time in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Duties

As an intern, you will be introduced and provided work experience and knowledge of functions and operations of a specific PBS Division. Typical duties may include any of the following:

  • Complete assigned space measurements and memos for files associated with the measurement.
  • Develop test fits for customer agencies.
  • Attend meetings with the Customer Accounts Branch to learn about the requirements and CPA process.
  • Develop standardized presentations for customers for topics such as: furniture fundamentals, design process, etc.
  • Apply basic knowledge of software programs employed by interior designers including AutoCAD or similar program.

  • Serve in a trial period for the entire duration of the internship appointment.
  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 1 investigation level).
  • Have your identity and work status eligibility verified if you are not a GSA employee. We will use the Department of Homeland Security’s e-Verify system for this. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.
  • Signed participant agreement is required for employment under this Program.

The GS-04 salary range starts at $36,973.00 per year.

If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.

To qualify at the GS-4 level, you must have completed at least two full academic years of post-high school study OR an associate’s degree in a qualifying program.

Degree does not have to be related to the position/series, however to be eligible, candidate must meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which the Intern may be converted. Preferred major/field of study: interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by courses in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design.

Individual Occupational Requirements

Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design; or passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.

Education Requirements:

Students: Current students enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Qualifying educational institutions/programs for Pathways include: a high school/GED whose curriculum has been approved by a state or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum; and any accredited technical or vocational school, 2- or 4-year college or university, a graduate or professional school, or a post-secondary home-school curriculum.

Pathways – Category Rating

We will use a method called Category Rating to assess your application. Here’s how it will work:

You will be scored on the questions you answer during the application process, which will measure your possession of the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Basic knowledge of space planning, interior design, and space utilization.
  2. Skill in reading and following basic instructions.
  3. Ability to gather data.
  4. Ability to communicate orally.
  5. Ability to communicate in writing.

Your answers to the questions will be used to place you in one of the following categories and standard score ranges:

  • Best Qualified = Candidates scoring between 95 – 100
  • Well Qualified = Candidates scoring between 85 – 94
  • Qualified = Candidates scoring between 70 – 84

We will verify your answers to the questions in your resume. If your resume doesn’t support your answers, we may lower your score, which could place you in a lower category.

Within each category, veterans will receive selection priority over non-veterans.
