POSITION TITLE: Substitute Cafeteria Worker 2023-24 School Year
FLSA: Non-Exempt – On-Call, As Needed
RATE: $14.00/hour
GENERAL STATEMENT: In the absence of the regularly-assigned cafeteria worker, the substitute cafeteria worker performs routine duties to include the preparation and serving of nutritious and appealing meals to students, school personnel and visitors, as well as the cleaning of the kitchen equipment and facility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or GED, preferred
2. Ability to follow oral and written directions in English
3. Ability to report to work with limited advance notice
4. Ability to follow safety precautions to avoid injuries of cuts, falls, bruises, and burns
5. Ability to complete written forms and records
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff
7. Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to:
– Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
– Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check
– Virginia Department of Social Services background check
– Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Follows procedures in food preparation, use and care of equipment, and personal habits to assure that sanitation standards are met as required by Central Food Services and the Virginia Department of Health
2. Prepares food according to standardized recipes and established food preparation procedures
3. Plans food production for the following days by preparing the designated food items ahead of time as directed by the Cafeteria Manager
4. Implements an acceptable placement of steam-table pans on the cafeteria line prior to serving time
5. Stores food in designated areas in accordance with temperature requirements and food spoilage guidelines
6. Covers, labels and dates food to be stored and properly discards outdated food items as appropriate
7. Serves food with courtesy, accuracy and speed while adhering to portion control, safety and appearance standards
8. Maintains kitchen work areas and serving line equipment and utensils in clean and orderly condition
9. Sweeps and mops floors, washes work tables, walls and equipment as directed
10. Washes pots, pans, dishes and utensils as directed
11. Accepts payment for food, using cash register/computer as directed by the Cafeteria Manager
12. Follows proper trash separation and disposal procedures
13. Reports needed supplies and equipment malfunctions to the Cafeteria Manager
14. Follows established sanitary techniques while preparing and serving food and while handling clean utensils
15. Attends job-related training classes and workshops
16. Adheres to uniform and personal hygiene requirements set by the Cafeteria Manager and Central Food Services
17. Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times.
18. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members.
19. Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities.
20. Performs related work as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are typically performed in kitchen and cafeteria areas. Above-average amount of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling and lifting of objects weighing up to approximately 45 pounds. Requires the ability to withstand temperature variances common to food service facilities. Must have the use of sensory skills as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
