HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Sculpture Studio Facilities and Safety Manager in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design (WSAD) oversees daily operations as a sculpture studio technician for the Edgewood Sculpture Studios (ESS) with full service wood shop, metal shop, iron foundry, CNC, plasma cutter, and various design and production studios. This position will develop and coordinate all aspects of safety protocols and procedures for nine separate design and production studios/labs in four buildings within WSAD, including ESS. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates the ordering, installation, and repair of equipment and tools at Edgewood Sculpture Studios and materials yard (wood shop, metal shop, foundry, and mold-making studios) and select specialized equipment and tools in other WSAD studios/labs as occasionally required (e.g., kilns, 3D printers, laser cutters, darkroom equipment, etc.).
  • Supports ESS academic faculty by training graduate lab assistants; providing in-class support with various tools, equipment, materials, and safety training; keep abreast of innovative and new equipment, tools, and material use options.
  • Coordinates, with ESS faculty, the inventory and logistics of material procurement, consumption, replacement, maintenance, and appropriate use/activities within the Edgewood Sculpture Studios and materials yard (wood shop, metal shop, foundry, mold-making studios), including coordinating the removal of old or obsolete materials or consumables.
  • Supports ESS, WSAD, and the College of the Arts’ (COTA) periodic fundraising and performance events (occasional after hours or weekends) staged at WSAD facilities when specialized production is demonstrated (e.g., iron pours, raku firings, printmaking performances, etc.).
  • In consultation with and at the direction of the College Administration Officer and School Director, serves as the project implementation liaison between the department and Facilities and Management Services for ESS-related renovations and maintenance; represents department on various college and/or university safety and facilities committee(s); coordinates the security of the ESS facility with the Public Safety department.
  • Coordinates multiple-site (nine studios and labs) facility safety and risk hazards management with the Fire Safety Office and the Office of Occupational Safety and Risk Management. Oversees initial and annual re-training of graduate student assistants on equipment use and material handling safety protocols in all WSAD studio/labs.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience, or a combination of education and experience. The departments preferred qualifications for the new position is 7-10 years of work experience in Studio Art or related field and a combination of work experience, training, and education can’t be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • HAZMAT, Chematix, and OSHA training.
  • Candidate should be forklift certified or able to achieve forklift certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Be familiar and have prior experience with traditional wood and metal shop power equipment, machinery, tools, and processes (saws, drills, lathes, CNC milling, welders, metal plasma cutter, metal break, hydrauilc press, power hammer).
  • Have familiarity and experience with foundry equipment, tools, means and methods (furnaces, mold making, iron and bronze casting, etc.), 3-D printing and 3D modeling programs.
