Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Writing Center Director, the Writing Center Coordinator, and the Senior SI Leader, Supplemental Instruction Leaders will be responsible for providing and overseeing individual and group tutoring services for students, specifically the development and improvement of English, reading, and writing skills. Supplemental Instruction Leaders will be responsible for attending assigned courses and guiding study groups for those courses. She/he will also perform other related duties as assigned and contribute to the College community through committee work and participation on key college-wide initiatives.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in and assist with Writing Center projects.
- Travel between the main campus and south campus locations.
- Provide supplemental instruction resources to students.
- Assist in workshops and other presentations as needed.
- Assist director in operation of the Writing Center as needed.
- Perform other duties as needed by Writing Center Director.
- Consult with students in writing basics during one-on-one sessions.
- Create documents of various forms for WC workshops and presentations.
- Assist students in reaching proficiency in writing skills by demonstrating various skills.
- Provide students with written samples of exceptional written material for them to study.
- Maintain records of student achievement in mastery of writing skills
- Performs secretarial and clerical duties such as filing typing, photo copying, word processing, mailing, maintaining records, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Performs receptionist duties including answering the telephone and taking messages, and greeting office visitors.
- Run campus errands.
Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; knowledge of tutorial objectives, principals, methods, and techniques; the ability to plan and organize related programs and activities; ability to create individualized lesson plans and practice tests. Additionally, effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and influence skills are required to effectively collaborate with students, Division Deans, faculty, advisors, counselors, and all levels of staff. Proficiency with various computer software programs including Microsoft Office suite and experience with Ellucian Colleague or similar higher education platform is required. An understanding of, and commitment to, the role of a comprehensive community college in an urban multi-cultural setting also required, with prior experience in working with non-traditional students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds being essential.
- Some experience in tutoring writing or English/writing related
Proficient writing skills as demonstrated with writing samples and GPA in English courses
Preferred:
- .30 college credit hours
- Tutoring multilingual students
Leadership experience
1+ years experience in tutoring writing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Employee should be skilled in the use of the written word in English as well as use of a personal computer and basic computer software as well as knowledge in the use of various office machines.
- Good conversational skills in person and by telephone.
- Employee shall have the ability to organize various activities assigned to them and the ability to work with other personnel in a courteous and professional manner.
- This includes the ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
