DoveLewis Emergency and Specialty Animal Hospital is hiring full-time Surgery Veterinary Assistant 1s. We are currently hiring for Swing and Overnight shifts.
Surgery Veterinary Assistant 1s are responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the surgery department, aspects of surgeries, and post-operative care. This position may also perform work as a Veterinary Assistant 1 in the ICU or ER. A genuine love of and respect for all animals is required, as is an appreciation of the human-animal bond. The description below is meant as a general overview and is not an exhaustive list of job duties which the incumbent may be expected to perform.
What you’ll do:
- – Restrain patients while technicians perform pre-op care (IVC placement, pre-meds, intubation, etc.)
- – Shave and prep surgical sites, perform sterile and non-sterile scrubbing
- – Sterile pass-off of surgical supplies during procedures
- – Assist in various scope procedures
- – Set up operating room and surgical prep area.
- – Instrument care, pack wrapping, gas and steam sterilization
- – Maintain and stock surgical equipment
- – Coordinate reordering of surgical supplies and equipment
- – Maintain clean and sterile work environment (refer to cleaning checklist for details)
- – Stock all surgery suites of hospital
- – Wash, fold, and stock laundry
- – Retrieve recumbent animals using gurney (lifting 40 pounds or more with assistance)
- – Provide aftercare for deceased/euthanized animals, including completion of ID tag with pertinent information
- – Work in coordination with other surgery assistants on group and individual projects
- – Maintain and facilitate communication between shifts with coworkers
- – Train both new and tenured employees in surgical assistant duties
- – Take weight and TPR on animals as directed.
- – Report any concerns, problems, or staffing issues to Shift Lead or department manager.
- – Share on-call responsibilities and assist with shift coverage as needed.
- – Perform other miscellaneous tasks or assigned projects

What are we looking for in a candidate?
- – Experience or education equivalent to a High School diploma.
- – Minimum of two-year experience working as technician assistant or veterinary assistant.
- – Valid driver’s license for driving the DoveLewis transport van.
- – Any suitable combination of experience or education may substitute for the above
Wage:
• $19-$22/hour
