Job Summary:
The Department of Neurology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking a System Engineer to join our team in supporting the needs of our faculty and staff in their various education and research missions. This position will report directly to Neurology IT Leadership, under SMPH Informatics and Information Technology Division. The System Engineer will maintain a variety of systems and web applications that support the departments diverse research, clinical, educational, and administrative roles. This position will require onsite work, however, there are opportunities for work from home.
The candidate will interact with roughly 180 supported users primarily in buildings surrounding UW Health University Hospital but also the Medical Sciences Center on campus (MFCB, WIMR, CSC, MSC). The position will support current infrastructure, provide end user support, and provide day-to-day maintenance and assist with long-term strategic planning. The technologies supported are diverse including end user devices (desktops/laptops), scientific equipment, a variety of servers and hosted services, and custom web apps/forms. The position will require the ability to adapt and be vendor agnostic in troubleshooting, problem solving, and developing new systems and workflows. The candidate will collaborate with teams across the School of Medicine and Public Health to complete various technical projects for implementation. The candidate will have some or extensive experience designing and developing web applications.
The candidate will work both independently and in a collaborative team environment while adhering to project deadlines. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, solid interpersonal communication skills, and self-motivation.

Responsibilities:
Creates and maintains the institution’s technical infrastructure by performing systems engineering work that is complex, project related, and non-routine, with the ability to solve complex problems and devise work approaches to the work being performed to ensure the long term requirements of systems operations and administration are met under limited supervision. Provides guidance and trainings to other staff and serves as a subject matter expert to internal stakeholders.
- 40% Identifies, troubleshoots, researches, and resolves issues on complex and non-routine systems, platforms, networks, and applications to ensure system security, confidentiality compatibility, and functionality according to policies, procedures, and regulations
- 20% Designs, installs, configures tests, and maintains complex and non-routine automation, hardware, and associated equipment according to customer specifications to meet unit objectives
- 5% Plans and coordinates system logistics, workflows, upgrades, and system security and affiliated procedures
- 10% Documents and disseminates deployed systems, system upgrades, or changes to the appropriate entities according to established policies and procedures
- 5% Installs firewalls, host and client access mechanisms, permissions, and user accounts
- 20% Designs, develops, and supports multiple WordPress installations and custom built internal and external web applications, forms, and databases

-Experience supporting and maintaining servers running Windows Server 2012 or newer and Linux distributions based off Fedora or Debian
-Experience developing in one or more common programming language like PHP, JavaScript, or Python
-Ability to prioritize, coordinate, and deliver on multiple pending goals and tasks adhering to deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
-One or more years of web development experience
-Experience with IT End User Support and an ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical customers
-Experience administering hypervisors like ESXi or Hyper-V
-Experience developing and maintaining websites using a content management system like WordPress
-Experience administering a web service like Apache or IIS
-Extensive knowledge of the IT field including networking, security, and systems administration
-Experience with patch management solutions like BigFix, PDQ Deploy, or Workspace One
-Knowledge of relational database systems like MySQL/MariaDB or Microsoft SQL Server
-Experience with version control systems like Git/GitHub
-Experience handling restricted data classifications like PHI under HIPAA

Additional Information:
This position has been identified as a position that will be located in or regularly access UW Health locations. This position will need to adhere to UW Health policies and affiliated requirements. UW Health requires that anyone (all staff, faculty students, volunteers, and other affiliated individuals) working in or regularly accessing UW Health locations receive the COVID-19 primary vaccination series and first booster. This position will be required to adhere to that policy and if not in full compliance to have a plan for achieving full compliance within 40 days of the first day of employment. The School of Medicine and Public Health is in the process of centralizing the Information Technology resources and functions throughout the school. This position will be housed within the central Informatics & Information Technology team effective July 1, 2023. Specific details regarding any change in department and operational area will be communicated with the finalist in advance. The duties and expectations of this role will not change as a result of this project.
