Systems Engineering Manager – SLR/ VLBI Space Program

Responsibilities

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to support the Peraton Space Exploration Networks Services and Evolution (SENSE) contract for our NASA customer based in Greenbelt, MD (GSFC). This position will allow for telework, but will require on site work at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD and other NASA locations as needed, and will require a person who is within a commutable distance locally.

As prime contractor on the Peraton Space Exploration Networks Services and Evolution (SENSE) contract, Peraton is responsible for the operation, maintenance, sustainment and systems engineering of NASA’s worldwide satellite communication networks. Join the SENSE team to support NASA programs that integrate with state-of-the-art RF satellite ground communications systems and technologies. In this position, you will become part of NASA’s return to the moon, support new earth and space science missions, and launch vehicles. You will be an integral part of a world class team that builds and ensures NASA space-ground communications are reliable and meet mission requirements.

You will manage a team of engineers supporting Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) systems while ensuring that system requirements are achieved, and will utilize an understanding of the systems engineering process and ground systems life cycle. Responsibilities will include:

  • Technical and Functional Management of an engineering staff consisting of systems, software and hardware engineers and technicians.
  • Managing all systems engineering processes and procedures for the NSGN operations, maintenance, and sustainment program, to include preventative and corrective maintenance, problem reporting, engineering changes, configuration management, and risk management.
  • Leading engineering activities for operational systems or subsystems using systems engineering methodologies and techniques where appropriate.
  • Interpreting project and system level requirements as they apply to the development, upgrade, or replacement of obsolete systems and components.
  • Identifying design alternatives and performing trade studies for system upgrades or replacement of obsolete equipment.
  • Applying comprehensive technical knowledge to solve complex problems by interpreting manufacturers’ manuals, problem reports, test results, or similar documents.
  • Preparing presentations and providing summary reports to the NASA customer.
  • Review engineering test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Manage regular status meetings with the engineering team and with individual direct reports to promote collaboration and ensure engineering objectives are met.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field and 10+ years of related experience, or a MS degree in a technical or business field and 8+ years of experience. Without a degree, 14+ years of related experience may be considered.
  • Experience coordinating and directing the work of others
  • Experience developing, testing, and implementing engineering changes to an operational system
  • Experience evaluating system interface requirements and integrating system elements and sub-elements
  • Experience supporting systems engineering technical reviews such as Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), System Verification Reviews (SVR), etc.
  • Familiarity with configuration management processes and tools. (e.g., GIT, Subversion)
  • Experience with data analysis. (e.g., Matlab, Excel)
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance, which requires a U.S. Citizen, if required by the program

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with SLR and/or VLBI data processing.
  • Experience with geodetic measurement techniques, geophysical and astronomical research.
  • Experience evaluating electronic and electro-optical systems including lasers, detectors, and beam control assemblies.
  • Experience integrating and configuring timing equipment for high precision servo control systems, data measurement systems, and processing systems.
  • Experience using complex test instruments such as high frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and complex computer control equipment.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and communication skills
  • An active Secret clearance

Target Salary Range

$104,000 – $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
