Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Systems Operator located at North Platte Officein North Platte, Nebraska. Position closes August 1, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This position will report to Operations Leader – Water Systems.
Position Summary
Perform all functions necessary to operate the hydroelectric facilities and wind generating facilities such as monitoring the performance of generators, turbines and associated equipment at North Platte and Kearney Hydro’s, the Ainsworth Wind Facility and Canaday Power Station. Operate and monitor diversion dam equipment, canals, reservoir gates, wind turbines and the Kearney Hydro using a SCADA System. Maintain proper water levels and flows from Keystone to the North Platte Hydro. Perform maintenance on equipment as necessary. Work twelve hour rotating shifts.
Education, Training and Experience
Two year technical degree in mechanical equipment, construction, or Energy Generation Operations plus 3 years’ experience in Hydro operations, OR
Equivalent military training, and 3 years of experience in hydro operations, OR
High School diploma/GED and either: 1) a minimum of 5 years of experience in hydro operations, or 2) other work experience or demonstrated performance indicating that the applicant has the skills and ability to perform the required duties of the position.
Experience in power plant and wind turbine operations and a basic knowledge of water operation processes and procedures, electrical, mechanical, computer skills and communication skills. The incumbent must be able to work independently.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Accountable for the operation of the North Platte Hydro turbines, generators and all related equipment to insure the safe, efficient and proper operation of the hydro plant.
Accountable for monitoring, scheduling and making water adjustments to reservoirs, canals and diversion dams using a SCADA System or operational plan to maintain proper water levels and flows. Receive water orders from customers to increase or decrease flows in the irrigation system.
Accountable for the proper operation of the Ainsworth Wind Facility and/or any other renewable energy generating resource being monitored by SCDA. Monitor alarms that come in on the SCADA computer and report any variances in operation to the proper personnel.
Accountable for the preparation of a daily water report using data from the Department of Water Resources, Central and the SCADA System.
Accountable for the proper operation of the Kearney Hydro. Monitor alarms that come in on the SCADA computer and report any variances in operation to the proper personnel.
Accountable for implementing the emergency action plan for Lake Maloney Dam, Sutherland Reservoir, Keystone Dam and Paxton Siphon Inlet.
Accountable for the operation of wind turbines, hydro’s, diversion dams, reservoirs, canals and river gates in emergencies and other situations that call for independent judgment and proper operation of the canal system to avoid system damage.

Salary Information – Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth.
Pay Grade – 13 Hourly
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $38.35 – $47.94
Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
