Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety, high correctional standards, and a safe, supportive working environment for our employees. The Wyoming Honor Farm, located in Riverton, WY, is a minimum-level correctional facility responsible for housing 299 inmates. The Building and Grounds Specialist position works closely with the Maintenance Manager to ensure that the facility and grounds of WHF are maintained at an acceptable level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Primarily responsible for lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal duties.
  • Additional responsibilities will be a canine trainer. A dog must learn basic AKC commands, and be able to socialize with other dogs & people. Dogs & handlers will be tested for proficiency.
  • Accomplishes the vast majority of troubleshooting, repair, remodeling, design, and construction of state facility lawns, prepares bid specifications, and determines the most cost-effective method of accomplishing repairs and projects.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of all lawn mowing equipment, riding lawn tractors, utility vehicles, heavy equipment, sand spreaders, and other mechanical systems.
  • Responsible for electrical duties including: replacing light bulbs and ballasts, repairing or replacing lawn sprinkler timers, controls, dialers, and other electrical components, troubleshooting and locating problems, and recommending design parameters of new service.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains heating systems, gas systems, refrigeration systems, boiler systems, and air handling units.
  • Reads and interprets mechanical, topographical, and electrical schematic drawings and maintenance manuals used in maintaining and repairing lawn equipment and controls.
  • Participates in the construction/energy management planning process and checks existing facilities/utilities and completion of the scope of work for proposed projects.
  • Plans, tracks/schedules, and performs preventive maintenance for all ranges and courses including all electronic and mechanical targets systems and mechanical pneumatic equipment.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those applicants with 2-4 years of progressive work experience in a skilled trade.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of electrical diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of lawn and sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes.
  • Knowledge of power woodworking, metalworking, and masonry equipment.
  • Knowledge of grades, kinds, and uses of various kinds of wood and wood products.
  • Knowledge of concrete masonry units and bricks, asphalt, and concrete repair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate’s Degree

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Skilled Trades) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Skilled Trades Assistant.

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Skilled Trades) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Skilled Trades Assistant.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Climbing on an occasional to regular basis.
