Teacher – Adult Education Practical Nurse Instructor
REPORTS TO: Coordinator, Licensed Practical Nursing Program
DEPARTMENT: Technical Education
POSITION OVERVIEW
Special School District (SSD) is proud to offer a comprehensive Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) course through Applied Technology Services, our adult education program. Our teachers are dedicated to helping students become LPNs and launching their careers in the healthcare field. In accordance with the Missouri State Board of Nursing, you will teach, mentor, and ensure the success of students throughout their 12 month course. Through your engaging lessons, encouragement, and consistent nurturing of knowledge, you will be the key to each students’ success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Theory Instruction
- Prepares course syllabus, lesson plans and testing materials
- Prepares lesson plans in advance
- When necessary to utilize a substitute instructor, the primary instructor provides necessary material and equipment for the scheduled class to be conducted without interruption
- Assists in the planning of courses to provide correlation between clinical experience and theoretical instruction
- Incorporates lectures, laboratory demonstrations and visual aids into daily teaching assignments
- Investigates and interprets trends in nursing practice and evaluates their adaptability to the practical nursing program
- Assesses and utilizes health personnel and community agencies for implementation of the teaching program
- Attends educational and professional meetings in related areas
- Holds membership and is active in a professional organization for nurses
- Meets the State Department of Education requirements for teacher certification in the State of Missouri
Clinical Instruction
- Provides learning experiences for students which are relevant and concurrent or sequential with classroom theory
- Assigns students in relationship to past experience and length of time in the program
- Selects learning experiences that will assist the student in reaching the stated objectives of the program
- Provides orientation to students to hospital, unit and client care at the beginning of each rotation
- Supervises and guides students in their learning experiences
- Facilitates providing the mandatory clinical requirements for students and faculty
- Follows guidelines set forth by each clinical area involved, while utilizing the facilities
- Plans pre-conference and post-conference for each clinical day: clinical conferences are to be a minimum of one hour per clinical day, client centered, and occur in the clinical setting
- Completes written evaluation of students at the end of each clinical rotation
- Completes written evaluation of the clinical area at the end of each clinical block
- Recognizes individual differences in students’ abilities and works to utilize strengths and improve weaknesses through formal and informal counseling and guidance of students
- Interprets safe nursing practices to practical nursing students to ensure total patient care
- Maintains a current written orientation plan for each clinical unit
Lab/Simulation Instruction
- Facilitate student learning in a simulation setting using pre-brief, simulation equipment, and post brief where students can practice and recognize errors in a safe and controlled environment
- Plans, supervises and evaluates learning experiences in the laboratory
- Inventories and maintain skills laboratory equipment and supplies necessary for the program
- Coordinate skills lab and sim lab schedule needs
Student Support
- Keeps accurate up-to-date records of each student’s grades, attendance, progress records, clinical evaluation, affiliation records, and scheduled and unscheduled teacher-student conferences
- Reports the need for major equipment and/or changes in physical facilities
- Participates in recruiting, interviewing and evaluating prospective students, as feasible
- Attends and participates in activities of the school, i.e., graduation
- Collaborates with the admissions team and assists with the onboarding, counseling, and retention measures for new students
- Assumes any additional responsibilities as the situation requires, ensuring continuity of ongoing programs and/or implementation of new ones
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of science in nursing required
- Minimum of three years recent nursing experience required
- Approval by the Missouri State Board of Nursing prior to appointment required
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Current undisciplined Missouri Registered Professional Nurse license required

Starting at $64,240.93 to $83,740.39 based on education and experience
