Tech Manager

Job Purpose

The Technical Manager oversees all aspects of production elements regarding safety, lighting, sound and equipment. The Technical Manager works to draft concepts in accordance with production needs. Additionally, The Technical Manager communicates with the higher management and informs them of expected expenditures.

Duties and responsibilities

Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • 3+ years’ experience as a Technical Manager and/or production management, working in professional production and/or theatre, and currently hold OSHA 30 and OSHA Fall Prevention Certifications. Be able to operate Qlab software, Yamaha digital audio consoles, and able to operate and program ETC Ion lighting consoles, perform production scheduling, tracking, and budgeting.
  • Be able computer proficient (Apple, MS word, Excel, Vectorworks, or AutoCad, and internet file sharing); should have maturity and understanding of the artistic process and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills.
  • Be proficient in all areas of production management such as audio, lighting, special effects, rigging, carpentry, etc.
  • Technical Director operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the venue, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, and communications equipment. Also oversees the use and maintenance of stage facilities; determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates; designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre and other productions and projects; monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies; attends technical rehearsals, in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the maintaining the show
  • Operating within current health and safety regulations to ensure a safe environment.
  • Keeping abreast of the advances in technologies and techniques in the industry.
  • Taking on frontline electrical maintenance duties when needed
  • Aids in all stages of post-production including during finalizing
  • Tech Manager orders items for the department with prior approval from General Manager
  • Tech Director is required to report any damaged property to the General Manager and Operations Manager.
  • In charge of scheduling, hiring, training, and maintaining the technical department.
  • Maintaining personal health and sanitation standards
  • Performing other work-related duties as assigned

Working conditions

Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people and will require working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires working in hot, wet, humid and loud environment for long periods of time. Directly responsible for oversight of venue safety and reporting of such concerns or violations to appropriate management.

Physical requirements
• Be able to lift, reach, bend and stoop
• Be able to working in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours)
• Be able to safely lift bags, cases and stacks weighing up to 60 pounds up to 30 times per shift
